I am trying to install a Sierra coil in a 72 Evinrude four but the wire to the spark is too long so that when the wire is inserted in the coil the coil won't line up with the screw holes. The OEM fit perfectly. What do you do in this case?

Step # 1 is to remove the magneto plate.-----Then loosen the plug wire.-------Then screw the plug wire into the coil.-------Install screws on bottom of the plate to hold the wire again.--------Install magneto plate.---------Line up the coil and tighten the screws.

Thank you Racerone for answering my questions. When you say magneto plate, is that the same thing as the armature plate they talk about in the manual?
Thanks again.

Magneto plate, mag plate, armature plate=all the same thing. Your problem probably is because the wire screws into the new coil, whereas it just pushed into the old one.

I hope this doesn't sound too dumb but how do you take off the armature plate? Not described in manual.

Must be some manual. Anyhoo, remember the long screw you took out of the coil? There is another one through the other coil. There are also two more (short ones) down between the coil and points. Loosen all four and lift mag plate up and off.

I was hoping to be done with the questions but now I am wondering if there is a trick to lining up the armature plate to the screw holes to reinstall. I just spent 40 minutes making marks and trying everything i could think of to get that back on. Thanks again F_R and racerone.

I've used metal rods as dowels to realign those holes...a nail, cut off pieces of a coat hanger, etc. would work fine

????---Never had a problem installing it.---Position the ring with one set of holes in the right spot.---Then lower the mag plate with those 2 screws very close to lining up with the 2 holes in the ring.---Make sure throttle follower is out of the way.--Easy, never had a problem.

What racer said, I've removed and reinstalled literally thousands of them with no problem. Eye-ball align them, drop the plate on and wiggle it back and forth watching and feeling the screws to align with the holes.

Thank you. Yeah the plate was hung up a little on the throttle. So now I have them all in and the magneto is hitting on the coil. Can't really see what I did wrong as it screwed in fine. I am using the sierra replacement coils. Any ideas as to how to fix? Thanks again.

The coils need to be adjusted.-------The factory has a special ring to set them.--------You need to move the coil back so that it clears its mounting boss.
