How do you do it on an O/B 2 stroke, 2 cycle '65 33 hp 'Rude?

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

Re: Installing an RPM gauge

The easiest way is to get a Tinytach. They are super simple to install, reliable and will work on most any motor. Here's a link: You may want to order extra cable, as what they give you is short...(6')(You must order this when you order the Tach)

If you read about the tinytach and decide you want a more conventional tachometer, then start by looking at the gauges on iboats. Teleflex has a variety of styles from standard to high end.

They are specific to outboard motors, connect easily and come with instructions.

Re: Installing an RPM gauge

Thanks guys. I will check out that tiny tach. Also I do like one of the Teleflex..I was looking at them earlier. And Mark I love your restored '65 Niagra custom. I also have a '65 Niagram custom (with the upgraded wood paneling). Mine is in better shape then what you started with (I still have original MFG emblems and original 3 spoke white steering wheel) :) But I need to do your fiberglass restore and window trick (for now I have just removed the windshield). And I love your fixed fuel tank....I am hoping to get the engine back in good working order after a couple years of no service....thanks again for the info.

So if I do go with the Teleflex sounds like I don't have to buy any special senders or recievers or anything for RPM gauge?

Re: Installing an RPM gauge

Most O/B have the tach sending wire standard. On Johnson, look at/inside the control box or under engine cover for the grey wire. Not sure what color Merc and others used. But no special sending units are needed.

What you do need to do is set the tach to match your engine's alternator pole number. Most are 4 or 5 or 6. There is a setting on the back of marine tachs to do just that. This is because the tachs are driven off of the alternator pulse, not the points/ignition. The instructions list almost all motors and the proper setting for that motor. If you search the Teleflex web site, it will have a document that lists the motors and settings there too.
