Installing battery selector switch... some questions

I have a used Perko battery selector switch that I plan on installing in my boat. The boat is a 1972 Searay with a Mercruiser I/O. I understand the wiring - it is simple and straightforward.

I have a question about the best location.

I know it needs to be as close to the batteries as practical, but I wonder how important is it to be protected from the "elements."

I am installing the one pictured on the left:

Here's a couple shots of the stern area where it will be installed:

I can easily install it just to the left of the "doghouse" - but then it is exposed to the elements. If I put it underneath, where would you suggest? Especially so I can access it without standing on my head. ;)

One quick "bump" - any suggestions at all?

To be honest, I like to install them where they are relatively easily accessed, yet not only protected from the elements, but also not in plain sight. It's a good deterrant to theft of your boat, not that anyone is out to steal a '72 Searay...:D

There doesn't seem to be a good, easy access location that is protected. I thought of fashioning a dry box of some sort.... I will have to give this some more thought.

Also a location that minimizes the length of cables you need to purchase.
