Hi, I have just ordered a set of Boyesen Reeds B144 for my Johnson 90HP 1989, and have a couple of questions regarding extra parts that I may have to order to complete the job, I am going to order 2x carb 1x manifold gaskets, do I need to order leaf plate gaskets? Also I am looking at enriching the idle circuit as a precaution, ref attached drawing is orifice item 7 the idle jet? In this position I currently have a #41 orifice installed and assume I would need to go smaller in size to enrich the idle, being an air jet. Most of my operation is at sea level, any ideas on what size to go down to for a start. Thanks in advance.

.005 smaller on air bleeds for J/E V4 cross-flows. all materials for installation of the reeds themselves will be with the reeds.
You will need 4 reed box gaskets if I remember right. Make sure the reed pedals are centered as close as you can get. It also helps to lightly lap the boxes for a leak-free fit.

and for gods sake loctite the plate screws and the screws mounting the box's to the intake.I dont know how many motors I have repaired after a box comes loose or a plate screw comes out.
your reference #7 is indeed the idle air jet.

Re: Installing Boyesen Reeds Johnson 90

Hi Team, I have just completed installing the boyesen reeds and want to go boating this weekend however when I went to re-jet my carbs I realised that I had only ordered 2 new .036" idle jets instead of 4, so I have installed the 2 new ones in the lower carb being the most difficult to access and will replace the old ones .041" in the upper carb when they arrive (on back order) Would it be ok to run the motor this way? I never had a problem with lean sneezing but wanted to down size the idle air jets to be on the safe side. I guess it will idle a little rougher than normal with 2 cylinders richer than the others but don’t see any real problem with this. Thanks in advance. OBK

That's kinda like asking "Do I need insurance"....
You already know what the instructions say...I'll leave it at that.
It's your boat.
p.s. take another look at your signature, then ask yourself again. :)
