Posted about how easy the install off cdi on a 94 force (mercury) should be. The answers said it should be easy however, got into taking the old one apart and it seems like a nest of wires. They snake around and through mounting bracket. Just asking if anyone can help with how the wiring is supposed to lay in the engine bay and of anyone has a picture of how its supposed to look. The boat is the infamous Sea Rayder with the 90 hp motor. The part I have is the CDI 114-4953

That's pretty much how all the one's I've seen look. I've looked between the coil mounting plate and the engine block and most of the time it looks like a ball of spaghetti back there. Just straighten them out the best you can and make sure nothing is getting pinched under the coil mounting plate attachment stand-offs and away from the spinning flywheel. Use some tie-wraps to keep the wires as neat as possible.

LOOKS WAY MORE COMPLICATED!!!!
It's just got a lot of wires from the trigger, stator and both packs.
There is a wiring diagram on the block someplace???.
Some packs have 2 different color coded wires.
My top pack has solid color wires, the bottom has stripped colors???
Just get a roll of masking tape.
Mark EVERY wire you loosen.
Take pics of the steps.
You'll get used to it real quick.
Yours is the single pack so it's even easier.

Re: Installing cdi on force 90

Ill give it another shot. Maybe my attention and patience were shot last night. I did find a few wires not hooked to anything so i was worried that id never find out where they go. This all goes back to the "no spark" on one cyl and mechanic diagnosed it as a bad switch box

Re: Installing cdi on force 90

Well i rolled it outside in the sun for better lighting. Got it changed out 1 wire at a time. I did have some wires not connected to anything and i haven't tried firing it up yet. Just wanted to keep those who responded up to date and say thanks for the encouragement. Ill post later after work

Re: Installing cdi on force 90

Update. After I changed the switchbox the boat fired up but wouldn't stay running in the water. Acted like it wasn't getting fuel so i adjusted the carbs 2 1/2 turns out from closed. Still no joy. Bit the bullet and took to a reputable dealer to see what was wrong. They diagnosed it as a faulty install by myself and charged me $175 to redo it. Got it out next day and same exact thing. Fired up but when I go to give it any throttle it slowly dies. Took it back and left it , after hours, at the repair shop. Called dealer back this morning and they said "we had it running on the hose for over 10 min". I explained that it still won't stay running. Looking for any ideas on what to do.

Does your motor have a small maybe 1/4" diameter vent hose between the side of each carburetor connected just above the fuel bowl and the intake, or air box if you have one? Have you done a compression check?

Yes it does have the air tubes. I've taken them off and cleaned them prior to changing the swithbox out. I haven't done the compression test due to it being at the marina still but once I get it back that's on the agenda

Testing the motor on the hose doesn't really simulate real world conditions. The real test is in the water. In the water there's more back pressure on the exhaust which can have a significant affect on a two stroke motor. Especially at low speeds. Do the compression check, make sure the idle speed is about 900 - 1000 RPM's on the muffs, which should get you about 750 - 850 in the water. Make sure the fuel pump diaphragm and everything else in the fuel delivery is functioning and in good working order. Idle mixture screws typically are set 1 - 1 1/2 out from lightly seated. Every motor is slightly different.

By the way....not sure you can install the switchbox incorrectly and have it fire up and idle. Either it's right or it won't run.

Re: Installing cdi on force 90

Got the boat back today. Marina said that there was a carb adjustment needed but they took it out on the water and said everything worked good. Since the season is winding down tomorrow is the last day for us so we ll see how she

Re: Installing cdi on force 90

Took her out, started up and ran great through the no wake zone. Opened her up for about 5 min into wot it started sputtering and acted like it had a miss. Idled back towards the dock but opened her up again to great performance. Then were back to the miss again. I never checked the plugs since we got it back from the marina but I don't have any experience with reading 2 stroke plugs and these don't have electrodes like my others did. I will be doing a compression check but I think I'm good there. It almost seemed like it would go from 2-3 cyl's firing. Any ideas on reading these type plugs?

They read the same as the others.
They're call surface gap plugs.
Go with the basics.
Spark??
Compression?
Fuel?
Start with testing the first 2.
They OK.Then check the fuel for water?
Then check the pump for a bad diaphragm?
That's the old style pump.Take it apart and see if it's ripped or has a hole?
The carbs might need to be cleaned.
You have the old style choke or the enricher?Pics?
The enricher can send extra fuel to the carbs.
There is a diaphram in the enricher, it can rupture.

Well after reading several posts about this issue, I tried disconnecting the rev limiter and it ran great. Thanx to everyone who posted on this thread and others.

Did you end up leaving the black/yellow wire disconnected on the CDI box? I recently bought a boat and the person before me installed a new CDI box but there are wires that aren’t connected.
