I'm rebuilding my carb on an '75 Evinrude 25 (Model 25552B). I bought the Sierra kit that inlcudes the float from Iboats. The new part contains a "spring" that seems to fit on the top of the little pin that's above the float. It's part # 33 in the diagram. My old one doesn't have a rigde for the spring and I can't figure out how to place it or if I even need it. I've attached a picture of the part.

Thanks!

Re: Installing Float valve

#33 shows the valve, seat and washer. Not the spring. But the spring you show is what holds the pin in. Are you sure there was not one there before? Every carb I have ever taken apart has had one. It's hard to write but it loops around the pin and the tab that holds the float. Sorry, I don't have a picture. Personally I would not put it together without it unless someone more knowledgeable on that model comes along and says there is so spring on it.

Thanks!. I've never done one before so I guess it was there and I didn't see it. I'm not clear how to place the pin, but I'll go back out and take a look.

Re: Installing Float valve

Don't know what year they became standard but alot of old carbs did not have that clip or a place to hook it on the old float needle. All new carb kits come with a float needle that will accept that clip. It keeps the needle from sticking up in the hole when the float falls. The small hook goes on the groove on the needle and then slip it over the float blade so that the needle moves up and down with the float.

That is correct. Old style float valves has steel needles and no spring. Then they changed to needles with a soft tip for better sealing, but still no spring. That kind drove us crazy because the soft tip would stick up in the seat and not drop down to admit more fuel. Fortunately, they didn't make 'em like that for very long. The spring was added to drag the needle off the seat when the float drops to admit more fuel.
