I have found a lot of good info on removing the flywheel, but not putting it back on. Do I need to tap it with a mallet as i torque it down? Its a 1961 Lark3 40hp. Thanks
Make sure the crankshaft taper and the mating surface of the flywheel are clean. Install flywheel key and set flywheel down on the crankshaft, no need to tap it, torque to proper spec.
Just make sure the "key" is parallel with the centerline of the crank...NOT parallel to the taper before assembly!! Make sure it is torqued properly...sorry but I do not know how many foot pounds for your motor. Someone will chime in witht that info if you do not know the value.
Also, make sure NOT to use any grease or lubricants on the flywheel nut or taper...assemble dry!
Once the key is aligned properly and the nut is torqued to specs you're good to go. Anything additional (i.e. locktite) will only cause future problems.
