Re: Installing hull lights??

What do you guys think of the permantely mounted spot light on the bow deck? I like the idea of remotely controlling light than having to hold one and point. A spotlight install is on my list of things to get soon very specifically to find markers at night. thanks!!

They are pretty neat. Come in all shapes, styles and prices. I think a hand held will still serve you better when searching for the marker or bouys than a remote control. Especially when you are moving.

I personally prefer one of those tube/wakeboard/ski towers with about 200million candle power of off road HID flood and spot lights pointing in a 360* radius powered by a honda generator so I can see where I am going at night. And 3 1200 watt amps driving 8 sub woofers and 12 speakers will let you hear Britney Spears moan over the sound of your screaming outboard while you fly into the marina WOT at 2:00am. :D :D :D

Re: Installing hull lights??

i got a set of the little docking lights for 150 brand new......(private deal)
so im gonna install them.......just for show.....but i dont think they will serve any purpose except to tie the foward dock line or to light up the landing area at the camp site....

i dont care if the beams cross....(crosseyed) cause the light will flood the area to be lit.....they will do squat for driving.

as for driving.....ill have the big bazillion candle power lights on the tower.

btw...lights only work if there is somthing to reflect back from...ie a log or canoe....(some dummys canoe and kyak at night here)

Re: Installing hull lights??

guess i'll throw in my 2 cent.

i agree with the handheld. all i've ever used on a regular speedboat. so no experience with fixed docking lights.

the way i use the light is sparingly. if i wonder whats in front of me i close one eye (partially saves your night vision) and make a fast scan of what's ahead. the light is only on for a sec. or two as i'm just makeing a quick scan for obsticals. i also use it for locating bouy markers when beaching or at the dock.. i do keep both eyes open then though as i'm usually done with the need for night vision at that point.
Also realize that at night, you can not see very good looking straight at an object. You must look slightly left or right at the object of interest.
this is true for sure. i'll even go one further. you don't look at the object but almost look for it's shadow(outline) off center like described....

the fixed docking headlights i can't think would suit my purpose at night. i want to see way more than just whats directly in front of me.... a mounted adj. light might suit me particular needs, but i'd think it'd be slow compared to being able to just point a handheld...

final straw for me is. i don't want any extra holes in my boat anywhere.... good luck with your desission.... looks like ya got plenty of input on the subject...:)
