Installing new Deck

Guys, my old deck was installed using staples (about an inch and a half long). I dont have a stapeler so am thinking of using Nails or screws. I prefer the idea of screws as they are more solid, but the stringers might split? So maybe nails are better? What do you think? If I use screws, I was going to use the screw designed for outdoor decks (gold in colour) as they don't rust, otherwise I can use stainless steel or regular screws.. Which would be better?

Either deck screws or SS depending on diameter your using, you should drill a pilot hole if you think your stringers (or anything) will split. You can coat your screws with 3M 5200 if you're insecure about the holding strenght. But, most likely, if your floor is soft, so are your stringers.

I drilled in a couple of places and the stringers where very solid. My deck seems to have died in one place from dry rot not wet rot? But the whole deck was not as solid as I would like.. but it doesn't look wet, ie when I cut the plywood, it has a healthy colour of plywood, not a dark colour of roten wood. Maybe a 1/2" deck is always going to flex.. I still needed to replace the front section that had the dry rot.

When I installed my deck, I put a bead of 5200 onto the stringers, drilled pilot holes and then used SS deck screws to hold it all down.
