Just got a 20 gal Moeller above deck tank, first off, does anyone else have one?

The gas cap looks like its to small, only gets one turn to attach, and it does not go on straight! It does not make a tight seal. The cap in the picture appears to cover the entire neck of the filler thread, not just the first thread! Is this right?

also the fuel pick up: I got the tank connector for a Merc, but I can't thread it on, as it has these little 'wings' and the fitting is too close to the tank body to allow you to turn it in!.

It looks like they don't make these tanks very well!

go to HD, get a piece of brass pipe, so you can get your fitting on.

Permanent mount tanks are not normally fitted with a quick connect. You should have installed an anti-siphon valve, especially if the fuel level in the tank will ever be above the level of the carbs. The fuel hose then hooks permanently to the anti-siphone valve. The tank is made correctly -- you are simply using it incorrectly.

This is an above deck tank, But I guess that makes sense. Does anyone else have this type of tank, and is the gas cap hard to thread on?

I have a Moeller permanent tank. It does not take a screw on cap, it takes a filler hose. These tanks enjoy a very high reputation for quality product. I had no problems with mine.

It is possable that the tank neck got deformed while still warm from roto molding, or it has a defective cap. Contact the dealer and see if a replacement can be had under warrantee.

Re: Installing new gas tank, fittings dont fit!

I bought two Moeller 6 gallon tanks about a month ago to replace an old Tempo 12g. For some bizarre reason, neither tank would accept a standard 1/4 npt threaded fitting. I completely ruined the threads both tanks trying to thread the fittings. I brought the fittings to the store and tried it on 3 tanks there and they threaded instantly. I am thinking they either produced a batch with the wrong threads or they have really bad production quality. I also called and emailed Moeller multiple times to no answer. It's fairly annoying, especially since I also sprung for new somewhat-overpriced Moeller fittings (both the old fittings and the Moeller fit on my old tank and neither would fit on the new one).
