Lube it up. Being that you don't want an oil that'll be hard on the rubber casing I used petroleum jelly. Ideally have someone else in the boat to pull it in while you push till its all the way in and you can get the retainer bolted

Best would be a silicone lubricant like you might find in a plumbing store. (not spray silicone). Petroleum Jelly is just that, a petroleum product that can be hard on soft parts. You shouldn't have any trouble getting the cable itself through. The only resistance point should be the molded, ribbed plug that is affixed to the cable.

You also want to clean out the passageway, in the intermediate housing. I use a brass 20 ga shotgun bore brush. You can get enough corrosion/gunk build up in there to make it difficult to pull that plug in.

KY Jelly, imo.

Yep Howard, that should do it. On the other hand, re-reading the OP's post, does he mean how to put the cable in OR how to pull it out, thru the intermediate housing. That could be extraordinarily difficult. My local OMC guy has stated that on ocassion, he has actually had to cut the cable.

EDIT: Duh! I just re-read the title of his post. It clearly stated 'Installing'. That should be a breeze compared to pulling one out.

Yeah, a good water based lubricant will put it through no problem. I use Astroglide. It's so slippery I get excited! :)

by "through" ^^ I thought he meant getting it in. Thread title says "installing cable".

To remove- Lots of penetrating oil - any flavour, just wash it off after. 1 Person pulling and 1 person pushing from the inside. And don't forget to unbolt the clip that fastens the cable to the intermediate on the outside.
