Re: Installing Smart Tabs need help

what is the difference in chamfering and a counter sink?

Guess I am being anal but I only get one shot at doing this right

Depth. :) Countersinking is deeper to accommodate a flat head screw. A chamfer is basically a de-burring operation.

Go buy an 82? countersink tool from the hardware store and it'll work fine. If your boat is aluminum then I would recommend the kind with a single cutting edge like this:

Or better yet this: commonly known as a Weldon tool.

They cut a nice smooth chamfer when properly used.

If you are chamfering fiberglass then I thing a multi-flute tool would be better since the single will probably grab and butcher the hole:

Just take it easy and chamfer it just enough to to eliminate any burrs and so you can see the flat all the way around. The flat will probably be about 1/32 of an inch wide. Don't make it too huge or you may weaken the hole. If you are scared then I would practice on something else first so you can get the feel of using it. They are not that difficult but I have butchered a few holes with a hand drill before and I know how it is.

Just my 2?

Re: Installing Smart Tabs need help

My new 40 hp (max for this boat) came yesterday and is being installed at the dealer now as I swapped up from a 30 hp that with only two people (and my Wife) took too long to get it up on plane.

If I find once I test it out that even with the max 40 does get me up to plane fast enough with 3 or 4 people onboard, I'm going to put the Nauticus smart tabs on rather than a hydrofin.

** My question is since my boat is a 15 foot Lund "aluminum" and if there are no obstructions on the other side of the transom and assuming I could get to the bolts to put nuts on them . . . Wouldn't I be better off using this method rather than the speedier sheet metal type screws that probably come with the tabs?

I'd be using stainless steel bolts, washers on both sides and lock washers along with a marine sealant.

** Would I be better off using the nuts with the plastic lock washer built into it instead off a lock washer?

** Or should I just use what the kit comes with to fasten the tabs to the boat?

Thoughts please . . .

Thx

Come on now when has any1 ever been checked for max HP?!?!?! i get checked atlest 5-6 times a year by FWC and they have never looked at the plate. Thats why they make the number of people that can be on the boat so big so they don't have to get close to it, for a few years i was running a 90 on a boat rated for 70 and never had the first problem. Trade the 40 in for a 60 befor they install it and be happy
