Moving this from Boat Questions: OOOPS

Was cleaning the Motor up over the weekend to get ready for Winter Lay-up (Boo-Hiss) and noticed what I thought was a missing bolt on the head. But upon further inspection it looks like it may be for a Temp. Sensor to screw into. Does anyone know about this and any info on installing a Temp. Gauge on this Motor. Also, what would be the proper Temp. for it to be running at? I know a pressure Gauge would be better, but if this is a simple thing to do, I might as well do it.

rickdb1boat If your looking from the back of the engine and its on the top right of the water jacket. It a temp switch. It sets off the horn when a overheat accures. It goes in from the inside. It cost 47.00 and connects to the brown tan wire. You can re-tap (1/8 pipe) it from the outside for a temp sending unit and then install a gage and just use this a means to whach the temp. You will need to run new wires for this.

I learned the hard way by cooking an engine. Now besides the temp sensor for the warning alarm I added a temp gage (mounts to a head bolt) and a water pressure gage. I keeps an eye on um to.

The updated temp sensor for this engine has a tan/blue stripe wire about 7 inches long, and the tattle tale exit from side block of should be move to top of block. Search this site your engine for service bullitens.

For Stinky,
Looking at the Motor from the back, I already have an overheat switch which is on the top left of the head, with the brown wire coming from it, now! I have a blank hole that is threaded on the top right, which looks like where a temp sensor would screw into. That's what I was wondering about! Just to clarify.

OB,
That's what I've got!! All I want to know is: Can I just buy a Temp sender and screw it into that hole on the top right and hook it to a Temp Gauge(Not Pressure) on the instument Panel? And what is the normal operating Temp for this Motor? Thanks,

I believe OMC makes (System matched Accessory) for our motors ,however not sure if it is intended to adapt to this hole or not.As for temp range on motor ,dealer gave me a 163 degree temp stik to monitor engine at power head.Stick will liquify at this temp ,so leads me to believe somewhere between 150 & 160 is what you'll be looking at as operating temp.
