I really need help putting back in my bearing carrier on a 1978 Evinrude 140hp. Model 140883C.

The carrier is ready to go back in and I understand I need to thread a rod into the retainer plate in order to line up the holes when it is all the way in. The problem I'm having is the bearing that is installed in the carrier (part no. 382407) will NOT line up with the reverse gear (I think that's what it is) for the carrier to be pressed in any further. How should I approach installing this by lining up these two parts? Should I pull the bearing, place it on the gear, then install the carrier onto the bearing?

Re: Installing the Bearing Carrier

If you do that it will still need a force fit for it to seat into the carrier. I believe you are experiencing the oring on the carrier getting tight and needing a bit of oomph to put it in. First check the gear and make sure it will go into the bearing in the carrier. It is not a thrust bearing, only a centering bearing and should fit with ease with the reverse gear out of the housing and pushed in to the carrier. It will line up, unless you have burrs, or some other problem.
