Installing windshield on the SS

Thought I may as well install half the windshield for my upcoming sea-trial for my SS. It's currently a single console, until I do the restore, but I have all the glass. It was obvious where and how to attach the support on the gunnel, holes lined up. The vertical support which attaches to the top of the console was straightforward enough. I don't see any other indications where fasteners were used to hold it down.

Can a fellow SS owner shed some light on how else the windshield needs to be attached.

Thanks guys.

Re: Installing windshield on the SS

Originally there were somewhere between 3 and 5 bolts (I forget) with square heads on them that slid into the "track" at the bottom of the windshield frame and then went through and were bolted from underneath. Some people have really knocked themselves out trying to source or recreate these square headed bolts. I was missing a couple and personally I just just regular bolts and the heads fit into the track just fine and surprisingly didn't give me any "spinning" issues when I torqued them down.

Thanks EZ. That's just what I needed to know. I don't think the windshield was ever attached to the console that's in the boat now. It will be soon though.

I made new ones with stainless pan heads and welded on a flat washer. Then ground 2 flats on the washer till it fit right. Width across flats was 1/2".

You will need a inside window to set the same angle as the outside support window. Its a straight piece and the ends swivel to set the angle. Hope you have one.

Hey Pugetsound....did you mean to say...inside window support rods....the rods that hold the windshield in place...where you walk through to the bow...

Re: Installing windshield on the SS

I got the windshield installed today. Helm side only, I don't have a console on the other side yet. A little tricky getting everything to line up right, but it's all good now. Inclement weather prevented my splash today, well that and a fuel hose with the wrong connecter. Got that taken care of. Hoping for fair weather tomorrow and a successful splash. With the windshield installed and the bimini up, she's looking a lot more like a boat and a lot less like yard art.
