I get this error message a lot lately after the at&t yahoo dsl software was installed. I brought this pc back from the middle ages. I upgraded it to XP service pack 2 and installed over 30 security updates from microsoft. I ran registry cleaner and AVG to make sure everything is clean and secured before it's online. The pc is running on 1.3Ghz, pentium 4, 128mb of PC800 RDRAM. It is a lot slower before I did all the upgrades. The insufficient resource error would come up after the pc being on for a while. It will totally lock up the system and the only fix is to reboot the pc. Anyway, below is a hijackthis log of my pc. i386 and xcuseme, can ya'll help a brother out? Thanks.

Memory..... You really should be running allot more. Moving to 256 will help but 512 will give it better resouces.

The older chips are cheap on ebay. I have performed the same upgrade on 3 peoples home systems in the past few months and the memory boost does the trick.

Win XP with SP2 is a hungry program.

Forsure on the ram your way lite on it to run XP ,minimum ifI remember right is 256mg of ram for bare bones .....but come to think of it I'm almost sure 512mg's is needed

Seeing that you have memory problems, you may need to make some usability choices - may have to go without some things so that you can do others. I haven't needed to do this sort of thing, but if I had to I would consider the following as candidates for not running:

713xRMTMon.exe is associated with remote control and tv turner cards featuring the Phillips 713x chipset.

ybrwicon.exe is a part of the Yahoo Browser, and offers an easy to use icon for this product. Being that you need memory, you could disable this as well.

motivesb.exe is a process by AT&T which allows a user to submit files to the Internet for support. If you are not needing support, shut this down.

ycommon.exe is a process belonging to the Yahoo Browser. Again, seeing that you need memory - use iexplorer/firefox.

btdna.exe - bit torrent stuff. Remove it if you don't use bit torrent. Even if you don't, be careful as it can make your computer more vulnerable to being remote controlled/hijacked.

MsPMSPSv.exe - part of windows media player that allows you to copy audio content from a computer to a portable audio player. If you don't use media player, or don't copy to portable audio players ...

RAMASST.exe - used to override window XP's CD burning functions. If you've not had any problem with XP's CD burning then you don't need this.

mpbtn.exe - comcast cable program to allow you to submit files for support. If you do not need support, you can probably disable this.

realsched.exe - real networks update checker.

Next, you may want to look at your window's services to see what is running that you don't need. (services.msc) A list of services to use: http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/windows_xp_services/

I also see that you have open office running... I'm guessing that you need those.

Like the others said, you need more RAM. Windows XP by itself will use almost 128MB. I would run no less than 512MB and really recommend 1GB.

You could also try killing off some of the things that auto-start or live in the "tray" or "notification area" next to the clock. Usually a right click on these items can get you to the properties to disable them. The ones that came with Open Office for example. They help the Open Office applications launch faster by loading certain elements into memory at startup. The downside is they use memory. The best way I know of to keep tabs on this is just to be aware of what's down in the tray. After you install something new, take a look down there and see if it added something. Sometimes by choosing the "advanced" or "custom" install will give you the option of not installing these "features" to begin with. I personally find them very annoying.

The other thing is the software from AT&T. You may find that you don't need this software at all. Often the software that ISPs bundle with their hardware is not necessary.

And one last thing I noticed. BTDNA.exe. I'm not too familliar with it but it is somehow related to bittorrent. P2P software can sometimes eat up system resources if left running for extended periods of time (which is what we do with them).

I don't see anything too out of the ordinary. Hopefully Xcuseme will weigh in as well.

You need to look at the specifications on the motherboard for what configuration of memory it can handle. Rambus (RDRAM) is outdated and expensive, but still available. Microsoft says XP will run on 64 Meg, but they didn't say how many days it would take to do anything. 512 is the recommended amount for most applications.

If you don't know offhand, the brand and model should be etched on the motherboard. Most of the manufacturer's web sites will have the specs available.

I love 2000pro, easy to maintain, and tweak. I know, no support, but it works fine.

Kill this out of you're startup too. It shouldn't be necessary for you're DSL to run and if you need it just navigate to the folder and start it manually.

Upgrade your ram .
You should be able to run a gig no problem .
I've run XP on 400MHz cpu's , and it is amazing how well it actually runs when you shutdown all the unnecessary crap in XP and all the garbage a lot of other applications install .

BTW , I like 2000 pro also , but , on those older machines I prefer a nice Linux distro , Debian based , over the GatesWare .

Be VERY carefull with the Defrag utility .
Once every 3-6 months is plenty , unless you are constantly installing/uninstalling programs , or , downloading and deleting files .
ALWAYS do a backup BEFORE doing a Defrag .
WHY ?
During the process of Defraging , you are pulling the data off of the HD and loading it onto RAM (volatile memory) , then writing it back to the HD in a more organized fashion .
This is a dangerous operation as it carries a high risk of data loss and corruption . 1 hickup and you have lost data , and , may be doing the Microsoft 3 step .

If you decide to cruise EBAY for that RAM , keep your eyes open for a faster P4 CPU .
Your MOBO may support up to 2.8 GHz and 533MHz FSB , or , you may be limited to 2.4GHz and a 400Mhz FSB .
Check your support docs or google the model # .

For that matter , you can find older machines off-lease , with far better specs than that aged rig you allready have , for cheap .

You could ALSO build a far better machine on your own , for under $500 , assuming you are re-using your existing monitor/mouse/keyboard .

A word on Vista : DON'T !

At the time of purchase, about 7 yrs ago, it was the top of the line as far as specs. This was when pentium 4 just came around and the RDRAM was it best buddy. I can't believe those sticks are still as expensive as when they came out. This pc has been inactive for a long..looong time so I decided to take it out for a spin. I know to disable the auto run, delete the associated registry. How do you disable the processes that I don't need so they don't start up again? should I delete the start up folder?

This depends on how they are started up:
(1) Some start from the programs->startup folder. To remove those, simply delete the entry in the startup folder.

(2) Some are started as windows services. Use Start->run "services.msc" to see those. Each service has three options: Automatic, Manual, and Disabled. The blackviper site, the overclockers, or a number of others (google windows services) will give you suggestions as to what you can disable (or change to manual).

(3) Some are started by various 'keys' in the windows registry. To see those - go to "sysinternals.com" (will redirect to microsoft as it was gobbled up) go to the "System Information Utilities" folder and get the Autoruns utility. Install this (basically just unzip it to a directory) and run it. It will show you just about everything. If you see an entry that you would like more information about - google the program executable that is being started up, you will probably see a few sites that give information on it. If there are none - then I would suspect the program.

Open Control Panel, select the System applet, Advanced tab, Settings button, Advanced tab, click the Change button under the Virtual memory category. I'm running XP and I set the Initial size to 2 times the Recommended and the Maximum size to the same as Initial size to prevent fragmentation. Be sure and select the Set button on this screen when complete.

Basically, when a computer displays insufficient resources after a bit, it's because there's some program somewhere that is behaving badly and not managing memory correctly.

This is a great suggestion! Virtual memory uses disk rather than RAM... It may be a bit slower (disk I/O is much slower that RAM I/O) but should get you through.

While you are there, click on the "Adjust for best performance" button on the Visual Effects tab..

Also get to your Display properties (right click anywhere on the 'blank' windows desktop go to properties->display properties and click on the effects button. Turn em all off.

Excellent advice so far.

You probably need to make a decision.
1) By the time you buy additional RAM, is it worth it? Could you get a new PC for just a little more? Why spend $150 just for memory when you can watch for sales and get a new one for $400? (granted, that's not a premium machine, but it'd be much better than you've got now).
2) If you have a Freecycle chapter in your area, you might want to join it and post a request for the RAM chips you need. That'd be free, and you might decide to help the rest of the community, too.
3) You might consider switching to a different OS. You might have detected some dissatisfaction with Micro$loth fom the others, as it tends to be bloatware and resource-hungry. Although my home network has PCs with both W2Kpro and XP, I've installed Ubuntu linux on one older machine to try playing with. I've just started the learning curve, but it appears I can do almost everything with it that I can do under windoze. Download Ubuntu for free at UBuntu.com, burn it to a cd, then install it on the PC.

The PC I've learning ubuntu on is about 700 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, and a 30 MB drive, yet it seems pretty good (first impressions, anyway).

Windows XP is just too heavy a load fer yer ole PC as is.

Yep , all great advice so far , especially the Ubuntu .
Freecycle is great , also try Craigslist .
Prowl EBAY , deals are out there .

Time you shell out $150+ for that hyper expensive Rambus crap , you could have twice as much with the current DDR2 Ram .
Keep your HD .
~$100 Can get you a very decent MOBO .
~$100 for a good power supply , less if you do not need 500+ watts .
Another $100 -$200 for a mid grade CPU and heatsink/fan . AMD is the bargain , as always .
Most likely you can reuse your current case and peripherals .

If you take your time and really shop around , I bet you can build a far better and faster machine for about 2 - 3 times what you are looking at to simply upgrade your RAM .

Gees, nothing like coming late to the party! I don't have too much to add, as good advice has been offered already. Clearly there are two ways to look at the problem. The first , try looking for outdated parts , Ram in this case or secondly, replace the MB and CPU. I did a short search and found numerous MB-CPU combos with more recent RAM type options. The cheapest I found was 75.00 for a MB and 1.8Mhz CPU, add 18.00 for a gig of ram. The MB has SATA Raid and PATA too.
