Im looking into insurance for a 1997 glastron 175se. The insurance quotes Ive gotten online ask for the number of drivers and then ask for the drivers' information (ie. address, driving records, etc).

Does this mean the insurance coverage will ONLY apply when the included people are driving? For example, if I am the only person listed on the insurance coverage will the same coverage apply if my roommate or other friend is driving?

Re: Insurance info

Better list anyone who will drive it more than briefly. Insurance Companies always find a crack to crawl through if they can avoid paying out on a claim. I list my wife and thats it. My sons do drive occassionally while I remain on board. Be safe, than sorry.

Re: Insurance info

So is the concensus to add my roommates to the insurance or to not worry about it?

Re: Insurance info

well if you want to keep your friend then add him to the policy if you dont then dont.

IF something were to happen when your friend is driving or borrowing the boat the following will happen

a - he will pay out of his own pocket for the repairs
b - he will make a claim on his own insurance
c - say see ya I dont have the $$ or insurance

Usually people always have umbrella policies to cover you the case of "everything else" however if your friends have NO insurance at all then if something were to happen how could they pay??

Re: Insurance info

In most states boat owners coverage is based upon your driving record; and they do run an MVR. Also, as with your auto coverage, the carrier will typically want all persons residing in the residence listed since as "residents" they have access to the vehicle/boat. You should be able to avoid this additional cost by having roommates specifically excluded by name on the account; I did this with some autos in the past. I think it is weird that you can loan your auto or boat to anyone and they are covered (so long as they are legally licensed or qualified) but a person living in your residence has to be listed!!

With that attitude, NY, I'd hate to see what would happen if one of your "not listed" sons wrecked your boat! :(

Not sure this is standard policy language, but it is in our policy:
with respect to watercraft liability, covered person means:
b. Any person using your covered watercraft with your permission:

So, your roomie may not have to be specifically listed to be covered. They are wanting the info for all the "normal operators" to get a better idea how to rate the risk & what premium to charge you

Re: Insurance info

So how do they base the insurance on my MVR if I do not have an auto drivers license?

My grandmother never had a drivers license, but used her boat 50 days a year. !!!!

I am going to guess that the underwriter has a table for that. A lot of other factors go in to rating, so that's not the only one.
