Has anybody shopped their insurance lately? I was wondering if any of you found any good deals out there

BoatUS has good rates, though not necessarily the lowest. BUT, they're there for you when you need to file a claim. That's the bottom line for me. They paid off on a couple thousand dollars worth of storm damage to my boat last fall. My marina guy prepared a detailed estimate, they sent an adjuster out, and the whole thing was done in a couple of weeks with no involvement required of me.

They're a straight up outfit.

I use boatus also, they seem like a standup company.

although I can't prove it, i think it's better to stick with a company for the long haul than to jump around to save a couple bucks each year. better to be an old customer than a new one.

Boat insurance really is dependent on where you live, your specific boat, coverage needed, if you own or rent, and some companies also check your credit rating.

You really need to examine the specifics and shop around.

If you don't shop around and look at the details, you will either be improperly covered, or overpay.

I'm in the upper chesapeake bay and in 3 or 4 quotes the difference is as much as $400 thats a big # at least to me for the same coverage type.

I have always used progressive. I have made two claims in 15 years and have had zero problems with them. The first was for a lower unit on a Yamaha TPR ($1700.00) which was damaged on the water. The second was a theft/vandelism claim. $4000.00 in electronics stolen. No problem. Had a check in 5 days. They also have a "vanishing" deductible. Each year that you do not make a claim the deductible goes down $100 until you eventually dont have a deductable. NICE. Two claims, good service and no deductible even though it was originally set at $500!

reef, at your local independent agent, see if they represent Westfield Insurance. American Select BTP-109 boat policy is worth checking out. Yacht type coverage, ACV type pricing. I used to work in claims for Westfield from 1998-2005. I paid quite a few boat claims under that policy.

I had Progressive and this year on my new boat they were $120 more then Boat U.S. I will go with Boat U.S.

I say shop around, I have done this for 50 years and never had any problems with any insurance companies. That includes cars & homes also.

I use State Farm, I feel the price I pay is very reasonable. I have all my car insurance with them and have been with the same agent for about 25 years. I've never made a claim on the boat, but they've always been very helpful regarding the cars.

Check with your homeowners company first. Mine didn't carry boat insurance, but they were partnered with Progressive. By going through the home owners company I got a significant discount from Progressive (like a multi-policy discount). Plus I like the disappearing deductible thing Progressive has.

We've had excellent service from "Progressive", as well. Only 1 claim in the last 12 years, and they were great. Cracked lower unit on an older Yamaha 250. They didn't flinch !!!

Re: insurance insurance insurance!

Hi all, am guessing most you guys are US based, but nevertheless here is a honest link to an article on how to get a good boat insurance quote, which should help you understand how to get a better value quote... how to get a best value marine insurance quote.

Obviously ALWAYS get quotes from various companies to compare (as they all do slightly different rates for different vessel types and many try to charge a lower price in year one then creep up the prices) and call up some to see if you can bargain your best quote down (just make sure you're checking like for like).

Hope this is of some benefit, David

Thanks I'm getting a wide range of quotes since I've been shopping it a range of $400, and boat us is among the highest which I would not have thought that. Seem dumb to pay more for the same coverage and I'd get a really sweet deal if my marina would'nt want such a high liabilty limit. anyhow any insurance company names would be appreciated

I use progressive for all my insurance and have nothing but good results with them... a little off topic but if your like me and rarely drive one of your vehicles, get that snapshot...I save the full 30% since I only drive like 100 miles a week lol
