any one use geico for boat insurance?

what are your thoughts?

my home and cars are with progressive and i checked with them but they are fairly high. boat us had two options, one about half the other but it had appraised and adjusted values in a total loss and the other agreed apon values (then was same as progressive

westfield will only offer boat if they have my home and auto

geico offered a quote with agreed upon values and nice coverage options for a pretty reasonable price.

Re: insurance options

It's pretty hard to get much of a rate without bundling. My stand alone rate through Progressive was quoted at $325 yr, my bundled auto/home/boat rate with AllSnakes is $117. Progressive used to have my bike at $780, I went to Dairyland with better coverage and roadside assistance for $412. Somebodys got to pay Flo's salary right?

YOu may want to check state farm. They seem to have good rates in Ohio.

You're kidding? Shame on them. They wrote my boat from 2001 to 2008 without my house or my car. And I only worked for them until 2005. I'll double check with a guy I still know in the claims department (He's pretty high up) and see if that is a company thing, or just an agent thing.

Re: insurance options

Interesting, I just switched from Progressive to Geico for the cars and Progressive was cheaper for the boat.

Shoot, you got an agent that doesn't know. It is a stand alone policy. American Select BTP-105. No home or anything else needed. Sorry you are getting agents that don't want to write business. It's a real shame for you, since the price is GOOD, and the coverage is GREAT. :(

Boat US. You tell them how much you want the boat and contents insured for, and you're set. I also have their towing insurance. Good rates and I've heard only good things about their claims processing, though I don't have first-hand experience. They know boats.

I will be investigating this issue also. I have State Farm for home, 2 cars, cycle and like them. I will let you know what they offer for the boat.

I would be careful on who you choose for insurance. Many "car company" insurance policies don't cover such things as environmental costs for sunken boats, salvage / recovery fees, etc. True marine policies would be through companies like Boat U.S. I personally went through state farm but I requested certain riders on the policy to make sure I'm covered.

I have a policy through Global Marine. I thought it was a pretty good quote for agreed upon value. Of course, this is my first policy so I don't have any experience with other companies.

Check unitedmarine.net and/or boatus.com

Both had the lowest quotes I received when shopping. I went with United Marine as theirs was a little lower ($278/year on 2011 Glastron GT 205, with $30K agreed value policy).

Re: insurance options

There is not going to be one company that is the "go to" for any kind of vehicle insurance. Get quotes till you can't stand it any longer, then take your pick.
For me I can't find anything cheaper than Progressive, they have my cars, boat and bike. And I constantly look. But others I know get horrible rates from them.
Calculating insurance premiums is probalby more complicated even than trying to make sense out of air fares.

State Farm is competitive if you can bundle (as mentioned). I've been a SF customer for 30 years and currently have home, 4 cars and 3 boats insured. Had to make a couple boating claims in the past and they were fine to deal with.
I think a knowledgable agent makes a huge difference.

Re: insurance options

I went a slightly different way. I added a boat "rider" to my homeowners policy (under $200/year). Is the coverage fundamentally different than a stand-alone policy?

Re: insurance options

No, I don't think so. A small boat is considered part of the 'personal property' under HO coverage. My small jonboat is covered this way. I don't know what the dollar cap is, but I'm sure it's fairly low.
One caveat about this type of coverage- the boat may not qualify for liability protection under the home policy- which is important! Ask your agent about it.
I maintain a blanket umbrella policy for liability that covers all my owned properties.

Yes it can be. Liability as mentioned and then LOW LOW limit of actual damage to the boat. Better make sure what coverage you really have.

Re: insurance options

Insurance...I've so many questions.
A. Would any of you put a boat on the water without insurance?
B. Is there a dollar amount that your boat is worth, when you just don't insure it...just liability?
C. What does a "standard" insurance package cover? Liability? damage to the vessel? damage while towing?

I can't wait to hear back.
