Intake for 5.7L/260 MIE

One my latest rebuild, (came in a box of parts, minus the intake and a few vital parts) I purchased a used mercruiser intake manifold to fit the above engine. Upon installation of the carb and wedge components, (inboard engine), The front two bolts of the Quadrajet need to angled to the front about 20 degrees. On the manifold I have, the two front holes are straight up. Is this the absolute wrong manifold? Can I drill and tap to correct?

Howdy Jim

If I understand you correctly, you're saying the studs on the manifold do not match the carb.....but you could make them match by bending them (or drilling/tapping) to some angle forward?


I learn something every day but I don't think I would want to use the carb if I had to do that....

My guess is that you're missing a spacer that matches the bolt pattern of the manifold and has it's own studs to match that particular carb.

I don't think so Tim.

The spacer are of a "wedge" design due to the engine with Drive shaft leaning toward the prop. (Inboard) The bottom wedge plate simply attaches to two studs approx 2" long, however, The front two holes accept 2 bolts, 4" long, but due to the carb angle, need to thread into the intake at an angle.

If that's the case, then you must have the wrong manifold (at least one not drilled for that application)

I know that some manifolds are already angled. I don't see why you couldn't make it work by drilling new holes (as long as you get them at the correct angle) For myself, I would want to use the "correct" one though.....

And as you probably already know, you absolutely want to ensure that you do not have any vacuum leaks. Lean running in a marine engine can sometimes cause burned valves, pistons, (catastrophic failure) etc....

According to the diagram, It has both studs and bolts. hmm

Number 9A. Stock Mercruiser part.
Also look at Summit Racing for carburetor wedge plates.

Still not clear on this. On another forum, one guy says its the same intake as all the others. They simply put on the gaskets and wedge and then screw in long studs, bend the direction of the carb. However, I cannot find any data to back this up. Even the parts diagrams show a normal 3.5" bolt in the front.

I don't know what that means.
The bolts used with that plate 9A use two (2) bolts 1.75 inch and two (2) bolts 4.375 long. Item #7
