Maybe its time to go to bed and look at this in the morning. i have a v-4 crossflow 1983 90 hp evinrude. i have the 1983 omc manual for this motor. i am tearing down the motor to bore out and replace a piston. got the carbs off, got the hoses off, and got the starter off. the book is saying to remove the 8 phillips head screws to remove the manifold, but that dont look right to me and i am having trouble getting the last three screws to loosen w/o stripping the heads. looks to me like the screws hold the leaf plate assembly, and the 7/16" nuts hold both the leaf plate and intake housing to the block. do i need to undo the phillips screws? if so, how best to loosen w/o tearing them up? do i need to take out the bolts before or after? thanks for the replies in advance. Re: intake manifold removal

You're right, the screws hold the reed cages. Those need to come out anyway and it's easier to get them out when the intake is in place rather than resting on the reed blocks on a bench. Those screws are loctited in so you'll need to hit them with an impact driver or heat the reed block.

Go ahead and take the 1/4 x 20 screws out around the parimiter of the intake so you can remove it. Then turn the intake over and heat the stuck screw areas one at a time. Then stick the intake back in the front half (we'll assume the powerhead is off and laying on it's back on the bench) and get the screws out.
