I have a 1985 Evinrude V4 90 with tilt and trim with a 9 amp stator.
My regulator appears to be fried. Stator seems good no black goo and AV output at 1500-2000 was over 15. At battery no voltage change and with accessories on battery goes down.
I understand that the engine only needs to battery to start after that the engine can run with out it.
No out put by regulator at 1500 rpm or greater and Tach is works but bounces around at when it reached 4500 RPM.
I did have to replace the Thermostat and the overheat buzzer has gone off a few times the unit is a CDI 35 amp dated 2001
My understanding is that the reason that the higher 9 amp stator and regulator was used because of the Tilt and trim models.
I was thinking replacing the present regulator with later model since it is significantly less costly.

A couple of questions , that I do not know the answers and could use some help.
1. Will a 91+ 10 amp water cooled regulator( part #0584204 $76.27) fit and function as a replacement for a 35 amp unit ( part #0395391 $207)
Why would you need 35 amps?
I read a post on Continuous wave that you could use the newer one.
2. The regulator has 5 leads 2 yellow(yellow and yellow/ gray), 1 red one purple and the gray. I know that the gray is for the tachometer and the red is for the charging the battery. I think the 2 yellows are for the AC from the stator to the regulator to change to DC current and the purple goes to the starting circuit. The unregulated uses a 3 wire rectifier
3. I think the fried regulator is affecting the function of the Tachometer and of course not charging my battery , but my understanding is that the Gray transmits the signal from the alternator. I think that is the yellow gray wire coming out of the alternator. I do not think it sends high current.
What does Regulator/rectifier have to do with gray wire?
3. What effect would a fried regulator have on the Trim and tilt? does the Trim tilt work off the battery or the alternators AC or both?

Any input or wisdom would be appreciated.
I have searched the forum , but have not found the answers to these burning questions.
Thanks
I have included photos of the wiring diagram and the two regulators the one with the gasket is the 35amp and the other is the newer 10 amp

You can replace a 9/10 amp regulator or reg/rec with either a 10 or 35 amp water cooled reg/rec but a 35 amp stator will burn up a 10 amp reg/rec.

And, yes, you are correct - with the rectifier not working your tach will not work either.

Thanks guys,
For your responses.

I low bid on a 10 amp REGULATOR 585195,on ebay and got it for $30.
It is used, but what the heck

Ordered gasket and new screws on boats.net.
I read the thread about flywheel pulling

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=442070&highlight=evinrude+flywheel+puller

That bolt on the flywheel is big.
I am going to find a big enough wrench or socket to get it off.
I sprayed it whit PB blaster.
I think I am going to invent my own puller with a piece of metal.
I saw some puller on Harbor freight

http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?category=&q=flyweel+puller

I do not think they will work.
I am also trying to locate a strap wrench bid enough for the Fly wheel.

how important is it to use a torque wrench?
Anyone know how big that bolt is on the flywheel?

So wish me luck, I will let you know how it works out.

That will help out tons. Do you have any idea what size the bolt is on the flywheel

thanks

1 3/8 on my 87 90hp, likely the same but i would double check with a tape measure.

It's 1-5/16 thinwall socket. The three screws need to be 5/16 fine.

The torque wrench is essential - 100 to 105 Foot Pounds.

Just be aware that when the 35 amp stator burns up the 10 amp reg/rec it is possible the wiring can catch on fire. Be careful.

he stated this on the first line of his first post:

I have a 1985 Evinrude V4 90 with tilt and trim with a 9 amp stator.

unless he is mistaken about his stator, i think he'll be ok.

Re: interchange of 10 amp Water cooled regulator 90+ for 85 35amp

I did check the amp specs it is the 9 amp the non tilt is 6 amp and uses the 10 amp rectifier unit, I am not sure why the regulator was 35 amps at the time. it seems the reason the replacement is so costly.

I really appreciate the valuable input.

How do I advance beyond cadet status . Is it the amount of interactivity.

Also will the trim tilt motor off the current the motor generates or is it going to run off the batteries.
I could not quite figure out why the extra need of the 9amp out put

thanks again

Measure the bolt head across the flats. Whatever that measurement is the size socket or wrench you need.
