is it posable to put a higher horsepower powerhead on a outboard i have a 1995 jonson 88hp outboard on my boat i was wantiing to get more speed oout of my boat by uping the hp with a new power head.can i do this

88 is a model designation which has more to do with cosmetics, oil injection, power trim etc than power output. The 88 has the exact same powerhead as the 90 and 100 (late model flat back V4 crossflow). Your 88 has the same bore, stroke, intake manifold, ignition, mid section and gear ratio as the 110, 112 and 115 late model V4 crossflow.

Can you make your 88 into a late model 115 crossflow (which is the same as the earlier 140 V4 crossflow)? Sure. But it's unlikely you'll see enough difference to justify the cost.

If you're looking for more speed take a look at your set up. More times than not there's more to be gained there.

Will any V4 crossflow ever be as powerful as a 60* or 90* V4 looper? No way, won't happen.

thanks for the reply. i was hoping yo get more speed.i am running a 22 prop with foil. i turn the motor.5000at w.o.t.i know nuthing about boats,this is my first time around with one. so i don,t understand what you meen by set-up.

If you are only turning 5000 rpm I would drop to a 19 pitch prop assuming that your motor is at the right height. With that motor I would shoot for 56-5700 rpm at wot. Doing this will probably hurt your top speed, but your hole shot will improve and your motor will be happier.

no luck with the 19 it overrevs my motor i turn 6000 + at wot. and this also took 10 mph off my boat.how do i know my motor hight. this boat will not plain.without a foil. eather prop
