Ok I just got a 1974 Johnson 40 HP w/ electric Start (40E-74S). I have an older 1963 Johnson 28 HP (RX-11A). I'm planning on removing and keeping the parts out of the 28 HP that will work in the 40 HP. Here's what I figured so far, please let me know if I'm wrong:

Starter
Starter Solenoid
Points

Do any of these interchange?
Prop
Lower Unit
Carb (maybe just needs different jets?)
Anything else?

I've been trying to find a chart of interchangeable parts, but no luck so far. If you have one or know where to find one that would be great.

If you need parts from a 1963 28 HP let me know

Re: Interchangeable parts?

the online charts only go back to 1968, you would have to get the 1963 part manual, the compare. i don't know if any thing would be compatible.

Re: Interchangeable parts?

points: no, totally different magneto
starter, probably
solenoid: not if original mounting location
prop: yes, but check diameter and pitch
lower unit: it will fit but don't do it. Gears and bearings are different and won't hold up with 40hp...that's why they changed it.
Carb: no, different venturi (bore) size.
Anything else? sure, have to check on individual basis.
