My 115 (1980) merc starter solenoid has the 2 big power wires on it and a biege and a brown smaller set of wires comming off of it and going to the control box.
Ford Soleniods are useable but there are only three connections on them, the 2 big power wires and the positive switch connection.
My question is how do I interchange these? What do I do with the other wire?
Thanks for all replies,
Falker

Re: interchanging solenoids

Ok..Something is whacky. There should be a yellow wire and a black wire.
At any rate, one has 12volts dc when the key is turned on, to the other (the ground). Do you have a test bulb or voltmeter? you'll have to determine which lead is the yellow +12 from the start switch. The other is black, and goes to the engine frame. See if the in-gear lockout switch, merc tilt switch are on the yellow. If not, you will have to run them in series with ther yellow.

Ground will take care of itself, thru the frame of the generic solenoid mounting bolts. but you can change out the too-small lug on the ground leg with a larger one, and just connect it under one of the mounting bolts.
