As stated in the title I am interested in a 1994 Pro-line 17' CC...I am pretty sure it is the sportsman 170 from what I have seen. I have a question for you guys...it is about the engine. The current owner is the second owner so he is unsure of what year the engine is...he thinks it is a 1994 but he doesn't know for sure. It is a 88hp Johnson with power tilt and trim. Here is a picture of the boat/engine...it also comes with a spare engine for parts. Does anyone know if this looks like a 1994 model or if it is older. I tried searching for some information about it and can't find anything.

Thanks guys. Hope I posted this in the right place.

Sure it looks like one, but many years look alike, if you will get the model number off of the mounting bracket it can be cross referenced and identified. If it is not on the bracket there should be a round quarter sized plug on top of the engine that has that information. If you can provide that number we can find what engine you have.

i had a 1988 88spl, super motor here's a little help

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Thanks for the help...I will take all that I can get...

1st-I am mostly looking for a boat that does a small combo of all three but more cruising and small fishing probably...water skiing/tubing every once in a while but more cruising/fishing probably. I will probably be using it 75% of the time in salt water ponds and near shore in the ocean.

2nd-Average outing would be two but occasionally I would like to take four out which would be the most I would ever really want on the boat.

3rd-outboard for sure. I hear that they are the most forgiving for a beginner boater on a smaller size boat. Also I hear that they are a little easier to work on which helps.

4th-My budget is small...probably around $4,000 at this point.

Would this be a decent boat to start out with? Thanks again.
