for what it is worth, most 28 contessas of that period had a single 350/volvo outdrive, underpowered, but that is what they came with. The issue is the survey, go from there. Without a survey, you are playing russian roulette with 5 out of 6 bullets loaded. It does cost a lot to rehab a big boat, but if you have time, you can do it yourself. better you than me. My perspective, you can buy a nice contessa in running condition for 6-8,000 right now. Money well spent to start off from a much better position.

fwiw, there are a LOT of boats that size (24-32') for change (that price) in our area. I've even seen some much higher end brand names for the same price. Spend some time on craigslist looking around.

I believe the storage, haul, and slip fees not to mention last summer's fuel prices are what makes the larger/older boats so much cheaper than the smaller CC's that folks can trailer around, launch, and store easily.

I wouldn't be so quick to rush, a surveyor is important; especially with a boat that size where you're most likely paying (for storage or slip fees) even if its just sitting.

Are you really intending on launching and trailering a 28ft vessel all by yourself?

Good Luck with that one, my wife bitches when we launch the 25ft Searay....

Do you have any photos of the boat? Which Contessa is it? Isn't there a flybridge version of it? What year is the boat? What brand is the outdrive?

fwiw- there's an '80s 28' Contessa near us for $1500. The ad said it it has a bad motor, but comes with a new remanufactured motor to be installed. I think there are lots of similar 'deals' out there.
