Friday, July 23, 2004

Yamaha jacks up prices paid by Mercury

Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. said today it will “significantly” raise the prices of the F75, F90 and F115 4-stroke powerheads it sells to Brunswick Corp. for use in its Mercury outboard engines.

The action comes at a time when, Yamaha says, Brunswick is trying to increase its purchases of Yamaha powerheads.

Brunswick this morning had no immediate comment.

“These prices are part of Yamaha’s ongoing efforts to restructure its prices in Japan and the United States to meet the requirements of the current business climate,” Phil Dyskow, president of the Yamaha Marine Group, said in a statement. “Yamaha is required to increase these prices in order to protect its commercial position in the United States.”

In a petition filed last January with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission, Brunswick subsidiary Mercury Marine accuses Japanese outboard manufacturers of violating anti-dumping laws here. Yamaha has repeatedly denied those allegations, but said earlier this week it expects the Department of Commerce will issue a finding of pricing discrepancies between outboards in the United States and Japan. That decision is likely to come next month.

Dyskow has said those expected findings are based on “apples to oranges” comparisons, but that Yamaha is taking steps to avoid the imposition of anti-dumping duties. These include a 3- to 4-percent increase in U.S. prices for model year 2005; price decreases in Japan; and a small change in the distribution in Japan to eliminate the complicated overhead structure.

Dyskow emphasized in today’s statement that Yamaha is not raising the prices of Yamaha brand outboards sold to customers in the United States.

“This increase only applies to the sale of the specified powerheads to Brunswick,” said Dyskow. He declined to reveal the amount of the increase.

In a telephone interview this morning, Dyskow said he found it curious that Brunswick appears to be increasing its orders to Yamaha, despite the anti-dumping petition and the release of Mercury’s new Verado 4-stroke engines.

“It is my understanding that since the ITC filing, Brunswick has attempted to increase its orders of 4-stroke midrange powerheads from Yamaha,” said Dyskow. “It is my understanding that they’ve also attempted to extend the term of the 4-stroke midrange powerhead agreement with Yamaha. I also understand that they have ordered additional versions — EFI — of the midrange 4-stroke powerheads that [the company] previously had declined to order. It is also my understanding that they’ve placed orders for additional F225 outboards after a previous request that the F225 contract be terminated.”

Re: Interesting article

You'd think Mercury could muster enough intelligence to burn their bridges AFTER they cross. Stupidest corporate move since OMC sold to Soros instead of Penske. Come to think of it, the OMC bankruptcy pales in comparison. Dumschitz!!!

Re: Interesting article

I'd hate to own one of those Mercahas right now. I've seen how Merc has a talent for severing all ties. Look at the series of trim and tilt unit fiascos. You can't get parts anymore because the makers told Merc to shag-off. If trends hold true...

It's not just Yamaha, it's Honda too. Have you seen the gearcases on the midsized Hondas? Sure looks like a Merc gearcase to me!

Re: Interesting article

I wish all the manufactures would jus go back to maken' their own stuff and stop all this suckn' hind tiit by using each others stuff..sounds like collusion and market manipulation. Prices are SKY HIGH for crummy outboards..and don't give me this apples to apples comparison bo-log-na...This inter mingling of parts has in no way improved consumer prices and this incident will definitely not help...6 grand for a 4 stroke 40-50 hp Merc is ridiculous and I WOULD NEVER pay a price like that for an out board of this class. You can buy a brand new KIA RIO car for less!!!!!! And the engine and tranny in that is a lot more technologically sophisticated

Re: Interesting article

Here's the latest volley in this Brunswick Fiasco.

"Mercury Marine is accusing Yamaha of violating a contract agreement after Yamaha said it is going to raise the prices on some of the powerheads it sells to Brunswick Corp., Mercury’s parent company."

"“We have a contractual arrangement with Yamaha that we expect them to honor,” Steve Fleming, director of communications for Fond du Lac, Wis.-based Mercury, said this morning."

"Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. announced Friday that it would “significantly” raise the prices of the F75, F90 and F115 4-stroke outboard powerheads it sells to Brunswick. Yamaha Marine Group president Phil Dyskow said the price increases are part of an effort to restructure Yamaha’s prices in Japan and the United States to “meet the requirements of the current business climate.”"

"However, Fleming said, “The threat of a price increase violates [the] contract, and Yamaha’s statements to the media violate the confidentiality clause in that contract. We are going to extend the same courtesy to Yamaha as we would any other valued vendor or customer, and not discuss or divulge any terms of any of our contracts.”"

"The two companies are the principal adversaries in a federal price “dumping” complaint filed by Mercury. The petition, filed in January, is directed at Japanese outboard manufacturers in general, but Yamaha has taken the lead in responding to it. The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to issue a finding next month."

It should be noted that both articles appeared in Soundings Trade Only.

Re: Interesting article

They are building a plant in China and it is in the final stages. It’s the only way they could compete with the little engine production prices.

Re: Interesting article

We got a 2005 9.9 4-stroke in and it was nothing like the previous model. Looked Japaneese. Could this be a China Merc, or just a Tohatsu? It had a Merc-type ratcheting clamp bracket that's just like the one on the 2-strokes, but heavier duty. That's why I'm thinking it's a China Merc. Fairly light for a 4-stroke.
