Interlux Brightside on hull

I have purchased a used 18' fiberglass bowrider. The previous user refinished the entire boat but used Interlux Brightside to paint the hull also. What should I do? Should I try to strip all th paint off? Throw a thin coat of epoxy over the entire hull? What is the best product/ paint to apply to my hull? The boat will remain in the water at the marina all summer.

Thank you

What's your specific problem with the Brightsides? It is boat paint, it is suppopsed to be "over the entire hull". With the exception of stays past 72 hours in the water, for a trailer boat you should be good to go . . .

I'm not expert by far but if it were me I would strip the bottom and apply a good bottom coat.
Is it in fresh or salt water?
Depends for the right paint.

The problem is that th boat will remain in the water all summer long. It will be in fresh water. What type of paint should I use for the hull?

Re: Interlux Brightside on hull

When you speak of the hull I foresee it to be the sides. If you are talking about the part that sits in the water then that would be the bottom. There are no manufacturer's that recommend hull paint for immersion much longer than the time QC mentioned. Let us know exactley what part of the vessel you are questioning. Hull or bottom?

Come on gcboat, that is a wise ***** answer. If the boat is going to be in the water don't you know it is the bottom.

Interlex sells several bottom paints. Just use it on the bottom and up the sides either to the water line or the rub rail.

Re: Interlux Brightside on hull

You don't mention the condition of your hull paint. I had my 36' sailboat painted with one part Brightside. It was the same paint used by the US Coast Guard. Very tough paint. With an occasional wax and polish, it will hold up for years. I took my boat from northern B.C. to southern Mexico. After 7 years, a buff out and wax and it still looked new. Pettit(?) Trinidad is a super bottom paint. It will hold it's own against much more expensive competitors. Excels in cold and tropical waters. An epoxy barrier coat is a good idea for the area below the waterline. Just my experience. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

P.S. You can apply the Trinidad directly over the barrier coat.

It's Interlux, not Interlex.

You can leave the Brightside on the bottom. Just go over it with the bottom paint, of your choice. I have done so with no issues.

Interlux makes many bottom paints, as mentioned. I doubt you will have any issues.

I would suggest going to the Intrrlux website for further tips/clarification.

Re: Interlux Brightside on hull

I sent Interlux an email and they recommend that I sand everything down to bare fiberglass!!!!. If I do go that route I guess I would need some Interprotect, then apply a bottom paint..... I am just so confused.

DJ: is your boat left in the water? Mine will be in the water all summer long.

No you're not.:D

Interprotect is a "barrier coat" as fiberglass can be porous, especially if it has been previously sanded. Whoever put the Interlux Brightside on before may have already done that.

Your choice. Give it a shot over the Brightside, or do what they said.

I can't tell you to go against their directions. However, I've "modified" their directions, in the past, and have had no issues.

Re: Interlux Brightside on hull

I agree with DJ. Your choices are to start all over or work with what you have. I am sure that Interlux is only going to provide instructions that guarantee that their paint will hold up in a wide range of conditions. Their topside paint is not designed to be a permanent finish under water. However it is impossible for anyone to say with certainty that it will fail in a short period of time. In other words it may last longer in fresh water than it will in salt water. Or it may last longer on my lake than it will in yours. Interlux simply provides instructions that will provide the best conditions for the paint to work as it is intended to.
If you have the time and money to devote to the job I would recommend removing the paint and re-doing it as Interlux has recommended. This will give you the best finish given that the boat will be in the water for a long period of time.
If you are like me and time and money are in short supply, I would recommend giving the brightside a good cleaning and a light sanding then topcoat it with a quality bottom paint. This is likely to buy you some time before the paint starts to have problems. But be prepared to do some additional work if we are wrong.
