Interlux Brushing Liguid 333 re:Cheaper Alternative

Hi guys, got all prepped last night for priming/painting, everything is all laid out and going to do a two part brush clean up so have containers full of brushing liquid where I will dip the brush in one can and immediately place in another can.

Needless to say I am going to go through quite a bit of brushing liguid 333....I read the MSDS sheet as well as the data sheet for this liquid and basically it is just 50% Kerosene and 50% Aliphatic Naptha so thinking I will only use the brushing liguid 333 for surface wipe down and thinning the paint if required.

For brush clean-up and etc....thinking I am just going to make a mixture of kerosone and naptha which both are readily available and be way cheaper.

What are peoples thoughts, sure Interlux is just purchasing readily available chemicals and mixing versus a unique proprietary chemical all there own.

Penetrol added to the paint helps brushing..... available at most paint stores or even home depot or lowes.

Hi Bob VT, is there another name for Penetrol, called home depot (I am in Canada) and they don't stock.

Strange..... I would try a paint store....that's the only name I know and it is not a brand but a paint additive

Based on MSDS...

Interlux 333 is 50% Kerosene / 50% Naphtha
Penetrol is basically 3 parts naphtha to 1 part Stoddard solvent

Kerosene is C6-C16 aliphatics with 15-20% aromatics
Mineral spirits (raw) is C5-15 aliphatics with 15-20% aromatics
Stoddard solvent is C7-C12 aliphatics with up to 25% aromatics

(Not a whole hell of a lot of difference there except for this: you can easily buy "odorless" mineral spirits in which the more toxic and smelly aromatics have been removed)

Naphtha is C5-C13 aliphatics with up to 25% aromatics

(You can get that in "odorless" too, which by the way, is exactly what charcoal lighter fluids are...odorless naphtha)

The only real physical difference here is going to be in rate of vaporization. Naphtha will be faster than mineral spirits/stoddard solvent, and mineral spirits/stoddard solvent will be very slightly faster than kerosene.

So IMO your best bet for both minimized toxicity and functionality is to use 50% odorless mineral spirits / 50% odorless naphtha (charcoal lighter fluid), or go 75% mineral spirits / 25% naphtha if you want it to dry slower and level better...especially if it is kinda warm outside. If it's really hot and you can wait for a longer dry time, you could go 100% odorless mineral spirits and be fine.

If you are less worried about toxicity, kerosene is likely the cheapest of these three solvents and could be subbed for the mineral spirits.

Based on the MSDS, that is a strange brew of chemicals that are mostly used as slow-evaporating odor/flavor carrier/surfactants in food flavorings and cosmetics/perfumes. You are going to have a hard time finding a substitute for that product.

Hello m8..

I would think Acetone or Laq. Thinner would work for the bulk of the cleanup. .. .. depending on what paint you use.

Ive used 333 only for reduction of interlux spray applications. gun cleanup was done with acetone.

Hey guys....on my thrid coat of brightside tonight and made a 50% kerosne and 50% naptha mix for clean up of brushes, rollers, etc...also been doing a wipedown between coats with my mixture followed up with the 333....

And only using the 333 for reducing and so far barely touched the 333 versus been going thru a pile of the cheap homebrew.
