I have a 2003 VP 5.0 gl. Recently have heard a grinding noise from rear of engine in and out of gear. Noise goes away after 2k rpm. If I turn wheel to left sound gets worse.
Is there a bearing between the flywheel and gimbal bearing. I saw a reference to an "intermediate" bearingpull the drive and inspect the u-joints and the alignment. while at it, change the bellows.
Thanks that was what I was trying to find outNo.
The older Volvo's had 1-2 bearings depending on the motor.
Sounds like the gimbal is bad.
Not on a 2003 Volvo.V8 Volvos have 2 bearings and to replace the front one the engine has to come out. They are generic bearings and can be obtained from any bearing supply house or even NAPA. The worse thing that could happen will be the shaft rusted to the flex plate on the flywheel which will prevent the engine from being removed. Keep your fingers crossed.
sorry duplicate post!Yep an 05 is the SX series with a conventional gimble bearing like an OMC Cobra some parts are actually the same. You probably have water in the bellows so check the u joints and input shaft seal (rust on shaft can cause seal to fail oil leaks). This is why I/O owners should pull the drive once a season to check these things before they become expensive problems.
If you wind up having to change the gimble bearing get the right tools to remove/install it can be a bear of a job otherwise.
With proper maintenance (yearly drive pull, change bellows after 5 years) the gimble and u joints can last indefinitely. My gimble was installed in 2005, still fine, u joints are original 32 years old, still fine. Salt water use close to 20 years now.
