Re: Intermediate Shaft Play

You see in picture #4, the single pipe that I am talking about and wonder if this would connect with my existing exhaust setup. The transom shield is still attached and the flywheel cover. I was hoping that I could use all of this without removing the engine. This is what I mean about plug and play, as I was thinking of using this transom shield if it is identical to my old one and just swap install it the same way it was removed.

The gear ratio is in the Lower gear housing of the oudrive and is pretty important.

For instance.

If the outdrive was set up for a four cylinder motor, it will have 2.15 ratio, and an outdrive set up for a V8 engine has a 1.61 gear ratio. A 2.15 will spin to fast with a V8 and you will not get good performance and could over rev your engine.

You can figure it out by putting the drive in gear, turning the prop and watching how many revolutions you get at the upper gear box/ujoints. If you turn the prop one revolution, the ujoints should spin 1.6 revolutions or 2.15 revolutions.

I realize you want to get the boat in the water, but you've got a bit of work ahead of you. Take your time and do it right or you'll be fixing it again and again.

that flywheel cover will not bolt onto your 350. It is made for a four or possibly 6 cylinder Volvo engine.

the only part that will bolt onto your engine and drivetrain is the outdrive itself. Not the transom shield or the exhaust, or the flywheel cover. And if its the wrong gear ratio, I'm afraid it is not a good match for your engine at all.

May need resell the package and find the correct outdrive.

But first I would pull the engine and flywheel cover and inspect it to make sure only the bearings are bad.

Sorry, i know this isn't what you wanted to hear.:(

Your also learning.:)

boating isn't cheap, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune if you can do most of your own work and do it right the first time. are you sure the outdrive that is on the boat can't be repaired???

If the outdrive is shot, I would just search for a replacement outdrive, without the transom shield and all the attachments, unless you determine your flywheel cover is damaged beyond just the bearings. That why you need to pull it apart and look it over.

Keep us posted, we'll help you through it.

Thanks. I just wanted to pull the drive without pulling the engine.

Hey Capt. I have been doing some searching and found that I should be able to use the upper gear box on this drive cause the changes are in the lower unit and not the upper. Can you confirm this?

No I can't confirm that, but I would think there is a good chance. It looks like the one you just bought is an older model and your '88 would have been the newest model.

Some things to check.

Do they both have the same style helmet pin? The pin on your steering helmet must match the upper gear box bolt style. Also you'll need to confirm you have the same number of splines on the shaft coming out of the upper that fits to the lower. these may all be the same however. Sorry I can't say for sure. If you do decide to use the different upper, it will need to be shimmed to fit the intermediate assembly of your outdrive.
