I have a 1976 johnson 135 hp v4. Its hell to get started, once I get it fired up it seems to run fine. But the next day I go to turn it over and it just cranks and cranks and nothing. Then out of the blue (after I give up for 30 mins) I try it, and it fires up. Ive changed the rectifier, spark seems to come and go. what could cause this kind of problem ? please help... thank you.

Re: intermitent spark ?

thanks for your reply. I have another question. Water sprays from one side out of the extra exhaust holes under the power head, the other side only emits a mist. There is a wire coming from the top of the cylinder head (the side that onley has a mist coming out) its not connected. does it go to a thermostat? if so, where is the thermostat located. thanks for your help.

Wire goes into the harness back to the controls, it`s temp switch for sensing overheating condition.

you might also have a problem with your key switch, next time it acts up,disconnect the red connector, then jump power to your starter ,if it starts ,your key switch or harness may have issues, make sure the black/yel wire at the pack isnt touching ground, its the kill circut, ground is made to the kill circut through the key switch, that provides kill,if ground leaks in the switck you can have troubles, you can also disconnect the black /yel at the switck and take the kill out,you then need to choke the eng to stop it from running ,MANUALLY if the harness is disc.so be sure to test with water to the lowerunit to preserve the impeller and avoid overheat
