My 60 hp Johnson runs intermittant speeds.. at low or hi speeds.. and is very slow to plane out of the hole... The bottom cylinder seems not to be doing anything, toook the cyd. cover off and bottom cyd. walls look smooth... I checked the coils and actually moved them around nothing changes, also moved the spark plug wires around... installed a new power pack, this did not help.. I notice when I take the sparkplug wire off the 3rd cylinder while idleing, nothing changes... it is almost as if the 3rd cylinder does not work at all.. when i take the spark plug wire off with pliers, there is a good spark from the wire to my metal pliers.. when i take one of the top two spark plug wires off, it goes dead immediately. I have recently had the carbs rebuilt so it should be getting fuel.. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you need to overhaul the bottom carburetor.

See what happens if you squirt a bit of fuel mix into it while running. If she picks right up that carb needs attention.

the carbs were rebuilt last fall. i asked a boat dealer and he said it could be the stator that is causing it not to fire on 1 cylinder.. does this sound correct? i did try squirting gas in the bottom carb, but no change...

You need three things to get power out of that cylinder.

1. Compression.

2. Fuel.

3. Spark at the right time.

At least one of those is missing. My bet is on # 2.

all carbs have been rebuilt and i even squirted gas directly into th carb, but no change on the 3rd cylinder.. i guess it could be compression, but the cyd. walls are as smooth as glass, could there be something else causing compression loss. also, could a defective stator cause the firing to be off in the 3rd cyd. only..
thank you for your help..

you say it has good spark,so forget the stator.get a compression guage and then let us know what it is.What do you mean saying you took the cylinder cover off?did you remove the cylinder head?if so,did you change the head gasket and torque the bolts ?that is important.Again,do a comp.test and get back.We can help you better then.

checked the compression this weekend... all 3 cylinders are at approx 95 psi..

kelvon, you said you have compression,in your first post ,you said"there is a good spark from the wire to my metal pliers.. "that leaves gas,its very possible that your bottom carb got dirty,it only needs the smallest bit to screw it up,the only other thing I caan think of is the reeds ,while the engine is running,do you notice fuel getting blown out the front of the carb?like a vapor ,different from the other 2,if so,it could be the reeds behind the carb, the bottom carb often dirties up due to the way the gas flows and dirt settleing

i will check this afternoon to see if the vapor is blowing out of the bottom carb, if so, how do i clean the reeds..?

Maybe your crank case is leaking... When started spray wd40 where the case splits.

if motor changes sound maybe thats it.

Or try switching carbs,

crankcase is not leaking, checked this, also changed the carbs around... no change .. the bottom cyd. still does not react.. even though the bottom cyd. is firing, could it be that it is not firing at the correct time... and if this is so, what would cause one wire to fire at a different time than other two, stator? had new timing sensor installed already...

Maybe your reeds are stuck. take back plate off and inspect.

maybe its the trigger plate.. but not sure.

Re: Intermittant running on 60 hp Johnson, 1992

i have come to the conclusion that it may be a defective stator that is causing it to fire on 3rd cylinder at the wrong time.. when i search to order a stator, i get 2 options, a 0584560 4/12 amp, and 0763763 6 amp...
what is the diff in the two and which should i order for replacement..

i hope this is the problem, i have been thru everything else... can the stator actually cause one cyd. to fire at wrong timing?
