Intermittent no spark

Howdy!

I just bought a Jon Boat with a 1978 35HP Evinrude (35852R). It ran fine for me when I bought it but when I hauled it out to the lake for the first time, got her in the water and she would crank but not start. I'm getting plenty of fuel but no spark. Using one of those in-line spark testers with a light bulb in it, I had a weak spark from one coil and nothing from the other. After testing it more I now have no spark at all from either coil. After following the directions from a post here (High Trim No Spark Test), I am pretty sure that the stator is broken (no continuity from brown stator wire to ground). Is this a common problem? Are there any other tests that I should run? The best price I have found on a stator is $215 here at iBoat, does anyone have a better source, maybe used? I blew my cash on the boat, didn't expect to have to rebuild it before its maiden voyage

Those are the diagnosis steps that lead me to the stator being broken. I ordered the stator along with a power pack and new coils, just in case. Can someone tell me exactly how to replace the stator, it looks like I will need to remove the flywheel? Are there special tools I will need? Do I need to mark the flywheel in any way before i remove it? Etc.???

I have another very important question ... I bought a new stator for my motor from iboats.net part #173-1651 for $215.00:

i would never use it. you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.
