I just bought a leftover 2006 pontoon boat and the dealer installed a brand new, out of the crate, 2006 50 Big Foot EFI outboard on it. The boat had been used previously so there was older fuel in the onboard tank. We took a gas sample and it was clear so I filled it on the way to my lake with high test for good luck and we launched her. It ran fine for the first week or so then as we were cruising along at 1800 RPM one day it hesitated, slowed down, sped up, then died. It started right up and would take some throttle but then would die again. My wife manned the primer bulb and that seemed to keep it running enough to limp home but we're not certain there is a correlation. It still completely stalled a few times on the way back to the dock. This happened intermittently a few more times over the next couple of weeks. I took a 1-gallon fuel sample from the tank and it, again, was clear of water. For good measure I installed a Ricor water separator with sight bowl. No water is visible in the bowl but the motor ran fine for several outings. Then yesterday it started again but this time it would always start right up but several times would die immediately afterward. Most times it starts, I quickly get it into gear, it will rev to 1200 RPM then start to die, pumping the throttle handle seemed (maybe?) to keep it running sometimes. I tried to give it as much gas as possible and for a few times it would just stall. Then suddenly it took off accepting full throttle and we cruised merrily across the lake back to our dock without a single burp. It seems like a fuel-related problem, injection maybe, but this is a brand new motor and I took the engine-mounted filter off after we returned yesterday and it was clean and without signs of water. Of course we have the dreaded 10% Ethanol gas here in Maine and I haven't treated this tank but with the separator I'd think I have eliminated any trouble from the fuel tank. Help.

Sounds like varnish from old fuel in VST tank....

But I diluted maybe 3 or 4 gallons of older fuel with 22 or more gallons of new high test and it now runs through 2 filters so it seems any shelac (varnish) build-up wouldn't be getting into my system. Thanks for your suggestion.
