I have a 1985 60 hp Evinrude that will not start at times. It is in the starting circuit. I replaced the selonid and it didn't solve the problem. When it happens the starter selonid makes a buzzing noise. The battery is fully charged and i get 12.5 volts at the starter selonid.I am getting only 4 volts at the selonid switch terminal. I can jump the selonid and it will start. the ignition switch checks out ok. I have clean all trminals. Does anyone have an idea where this could possible be. It is a intermittent problem.

Re: intermittent starting problem

janvan, When you say you jumped the solenoid ,Did you jump the large cable to the ignition wire or across the two large cables? If solenoid is good and grounded the only thing that is left is wire to ignition, ignition switch ,and wire from switch to solenoid.Run a test wire from switch to solenoid and see if it starts. If not your problem is to the switch or the switch. If it does your problem is in the control.Nuetral safety switch or lanyard kill.

Thanks for the information it is starting fine right now will have to wait until the next time. When I jumped the selonid I jumped the big wires In fact I carry a 12 inch battery cable with me just in case.

janvan, next time you jump the solenoid it is safer to jump from the large 12v cable to the small 12v ignition terminal and let the solenoid close the two heavy 12v leads. That way you don't need such a big bulky cable.Check engine block grounds for clean tight connection.
Please BE CAREFULL around flywheel when jumping .

Most times when you hear the solenoid only buzz, its the battery cable connections. Check them again, motor ends and battery ends. They gotta be TIGHT and installed first before any other wire connections to the battery!

janvan,

Follow the negative (black -) lead from the battery to the engine. It will be attached to the engine block.

Remove this lead and clean it WELL. Clean the bolt too.
