Internet Explorer 8

I recently installed IE8 and ran across a quirk I had never seen before. Somehow, I managed to increase the font size in my windows. I initially assumed that I had somehow managed to change my settings in the Display function of Control Panel, but that wasn't it.

I then noticed that font size in posts wasn't the only thing going on - everything seemed larger. Long story short, IE8 has a Zoom function under the View menu item. I had somehow bunped my zoom up to 125%.

Just to save someone else a little aggravation, I thought I'd pass this info on. I suppose it more properly belongs in the nonboating technical threads, but more people will probably see it here.

Yah, I stay away from internet Exploder. I use Firefox and Chrome to avoid the mass security exploits that p*ssed off hackers find in msft products.

That feature is pretty standard. It's in IE7 and Firefox too. I can hold down the control key and turn the scroll wheel on my mouse and make iboats any size I want here in FF.

My wife found a pretty annoying "feature" on her laptop by accident the other day. She comes running saying "my screen is sideways!". I figured she picked up some weird computer virus that was messing with her. But it turned out some graphics cards had a feature where control + arrow keys turned the screen sideways. supposedly the fix was control + up arrow, but that wasn't working. Finally I found a site that said to right-click on the desktop, choose "graphics options" and "normal view". That finally did the trick.

That one I've seen before. It provides an ability to use a rotated screen. My main monitor is a 22" widescreen Dell that can be rotated 90 degrees to portrait mode.

I don't use it that way, because I have a pair of rectangular monitors on either side, for a total of three running off of one computer. Although I set the system up this way for photo editing, its very handy for other things - I can open 4 -5 good sized windows at the same time. In fact, its been very handy for helping people here at iboats, because I can look at a couple of windows of shop.evinrude.com, while typing a response in a thread!

If you have a scroll on your mouse.

You have held down the control button while moving the mouse wheel. This will act as a zoom function.

3 monitors? Nice. I got 2 monitors going at work, and more recently at home. You get used to the extra real estate fast!

Firefox all the way. Adblock plus is the main reason. I have not seen an ad on a website in years. I also have IE8 but it is only used with a VPN program for work and one other program I use................

Thanks Jay for that tidbit. That actually happened yesterday on one of my computers. I noticed the font size was a little larger. Being as anal as I am, this drove me nuts. lol... Anyway, the world is right again. Thanks.

Re: Internet Explorer 8

I got a call a couple weeks ago from an account that I maintain saying that they could not log on to any websites.I asked what changes had been made recently and they said that they had installed IE8.I was able to log on ok so he was online at least.
I did a couple of quick diagnostics then uninstalled IE8,problem solved.
I am still running IE 6.** and now youtube is warning me that they are phasing out support for it.Time will tell, there are plenty of browsers out there.Ron G

It is nice and you're right, you get spoiled very quickly. I'm currently running an older EMachines, because my editing computer was fried by a lightening strike on my house. This CPU is marginal for photo editing, but it gets the job done.

What I did was to leave the on-board video activated and then install a duel head video card along with it. Normally, you would disable the on-board video via the bios, but I left it alone. I had to fiddle with control panel/display/settings a little bit, to get the mouse to track across the screens properly, but it worked out OK. The biggest issue was in getting the order of the screens right. I expected to have screens in a 1, 2, 3 order for proper mouse movement, but ended up having to set them up as 3, 1, 2.

The best part of this setup is that I can work on the virtual desktop as I do on an actual desktop. I can pull up multiple documents for reference, just as I would lay paper copies out on my desk, and then work on a web page or application. There is no need to jump back and forth between overlaid windows - I just glance over to another window to refer to some bit of info and then go right back to writing.

Another thing that I do is to place all of my desktop shortcuts on the screen to my right. That same screen has the menu bar on it. I tend not to use shortcuts for individual application files, so this screen normally is only about half full of icons. That allows me the other half to keep a productivity program such as Outlook running all of the time. Since photo editing programs often have tool bars that can be run in separate windows, I often use the right hand screen for those too.

The only trouble with this setup, is that I find myself wanting even more screen territory!

I see people giving away 17" CRTs for free on Craigslist now-- set up a bank of monitors against one wall and tile 'em :D
