Ever wonder how the web is doing in different parts of the world? This is a very interesting website. They monitor the world wide web routers to determine how fast data is moving around, how many packets are lost, etc by location.

Its not too techinal, and I found it really interesting to compare North America to Asia, to compare New Jersey to California, etc.

The local graphs clearly match the speed tests I have done.

I like the following website for doing speed tests, because they keep your history, and its set up to link your results to any popular forums you may use.

http://www.speedtest.net/results.php

The links look like this:

This speed test is from the Sprint Mobil Broadband service (Sprint PCS) that I got to replace the ISDN service I had. Nice improvement. About 10 times faster.

Not sure why the distance is such... or why it says we're connected to an Aussie server, but the high numbers could be due to all the fiber lines... :)

Very cool link, Mark. I have done other speed tests, but this one is much better than others have seen. I am on cable (Road Runner), using wireless router and 802.11 b card. Not too shabby.

From what I read "broadband" starts at 512Kbps and up. Most home useres with DSL get between 512Kbps and 6000kbps, but 1000 to 3000 Kbps is the national average for DSL.

Cable technically can go up to 30,000kbps, but in reality most cable companies throttle back to 8000kbps or less.

To make things worse, the more users on a cable system in your "area" (neighborhood, or square mile area, or cable grid - depending on how the cable company splits it up) will SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the actual bandwidth you have available. What stinks is when a neighbor is running a small buisness from their home with an online store 24/7 or there are a lot of internet game players on your block/apartment building. DSL is immune to this type of degredation.

Usually DSL users have similar down load and upload speeds. A low upload speed is no big deal if you don't load files to intenet servers, like large amounts of photos to a place like Photobucket.com of videos to Youtube. Wouldn't hurt to call your DSL provider and ask them to take their foot off the upload hose.

Here's mine...

And Mark, DSL users don't have similar upload and download speed around here. Nor are they advertised to. I just assumed all DSL was this way. But hey, we were all reminded about assuming lately.:D

Yes that is about my speed. That's just the way things are around here. Wish I could get the kind of speeds you rich city people do.
