Interrupter switch problem

While many of you are helping me with alignment problems in another post, I discovered yet another issue while out at the lake today testing the boat. I just replaced the lower shift cable because the old one was causing the interrupter to stay engaged. The new cable is OEM and adjusted to the proper 6 inches, it works great from forward to neutral but going from reverse to neutral kills the motor. I have to go to the engine bay and manually move the switch back into the valley. One thing I did notice is the switch is moving the same way coming from forward as it does reverse. I though each way was suppose to move the switch to one side or the other. Thank you guys for all of the help in advance and for helping with my other issue; without you guys I would not even be close to having a boat for the family because I can not afford dealership prices.

"I have to go to the engine bay and manually move the switch back into the valley"

the arm for the switch is spring loaded and should move to the valley on its own. you are mis-adjusted or binding.

There is also a slot for the lower shift cable that allows for more or less travel. Make sure that is adjusted too.

I will look at it again. I guess I missed where I can adjust where the shift cable mount can be adjusted. Once my daughter stops crying I am going to go out and work on it.

remove the lower shift cable, manually push the lever fully down and fully up. It must spring return to the valley. If not find out why.
Then shift the control box in fwd, manually shift drive into fwd by pushing in the lower cable untill the prop locks install stud end, then adjust barrel to fit.
FORGET THE 6 INCHES FOR NOW

Bt Doctur, when you say manually push the level down and fully up are you talking about the interrupter switch? Sorry for the delay, I have been helping a friend re-vinyl his boat all afternoon.

Bt Doctur, I miss read your post, I re-read it and followed your link and will try that. Hope it works because I do not want to have to upgrade to the new style.

If I push on the side with the blue arrow it does not spring back. It does not take much to get it back into the valley but it will not do it on its own.

I will try to loosen that bolt. I disconnected the lower shift cable when I checked it. The remote box cable was still hooked up.

no matter what, that arm must move freely and spring back to that the wheel sets in the valley.

I loosened the bolt that holds it down to the valve cover and it works perfect now. It was too tight. To anyone reading this in the future try loosening that bolt and see of it works. Once again thank you guys, could not have done it without you all. Looks like the kids get there fishing trip this weekend after all :fish2:

You might have loosened the shift plate from it's spot. There are some cylindrical spacer grommets that go between the shift plate and the place where they mount. If they are missing you might have to stack up some washers or drill out something to correct that space. That would be a pain, but the plate should have the correct shape to work right.

do not know why the italic's is on, d*@n computer. I will check and see if the shift plate moves before we go to the lake tomorrow. If it does I will run to Lowes and get some spacers. I am not sure where they are located but it can not be to hard to figure it out when looking at it. Should I take the bolt I loosened out and put some lock tight on it? I am worries it will come loose while driving.

Control "L" toggles the italics on and off.

No locktite needed, just the right space and a stainless lockwasher under the head of the stainless fastener. I think it's a bolt, right?
Get some extra washers if you go that route, you can't retrieve dropped stainless. It's not magnetic!
I think Mercruiser should have welded the spacer on the plate, or made a spacer that can hook on the edge til it's installed.
