That makes no sense at all. The shift interrupt switch has nothing to do with starting the engine, only when shifting out of gear in the water.

Are you trying to say you have to have the shifter in the neutral position to get the starter to turn the engine over?

Is this boat new to you?

Re: interuptor adjust

The shifter has to be barely out of straight up position to start, if it is fully pushed forward in neutral starter will crank but engine won't start. I am not new to this boat but since i took it to marina at end of last season and had ignition pick up module replaced this has been happening. Sorry and thanks

PS-Marina also changed my impeller pump at same time, so maybe something there?

Re: interuptor adjust

Do you use the throttle only position of the shifter when starting? If not, that's why it won't start.

It does sound like your neutral safety switch might be loose or out of adjustment.

If the switch was out of adjustment, it wouldn't crank at all. Which module was replaced, the one inside the distributor or the one attached to the port exhaust elbow? And make sure it was the right one fitted. There are different ones for the different engines. And a 'normal' 350/5.7 module is different to the Magnum modules.

BTW, this problem will have nothing to do with the water pump impeller.

Re: interuptor adjust

The pickup inside the dist was replaced.

You need to check the timing.

I have a Magnum motor. Can i see by the shape of pickup or will i have to look for a p/n#?

That part is the same for all the engines. The one that differs is the module (called the 'Ignition Amplifier') on the elbow.

Funny you ask about the port side exhaust elbow, because there is a wire hanging loose there as i described this last year in a thread. Scroll down to last post.

That is interesting. Is the ignition amplifier still the original, or has it also been changed at some time in the past?

I would get the engine warmed up and sit down with it and a timing light, shop tacho and a piece of paper and graph out the timing curve. That black lead could be a missing ground wire giving the modules an incorrect ground reference.

(Do you have Merc service manual #9? It has plenty of really good info on the ignition system)

Missed that one part.
Go to the engine, and disconnect one of the wires from the shift interrupt switch and see if the problem goes away. It's possible that impeller change could have something to do with it, if they have some of the shift linkage binding some how.

Timing was good.

Igniton Amp is original
