My 350 mercruiser 1988 model year only starts when the throttle is in near vertical position, what kinda adjustment should i be looking for.
Thanks
The shifter has to be barely out of straight up position to start, if it is fully pushed forward in neutral starter will crank but engine won't start. I am not new to this boat but since i took it to marina at end of last season and had ignition pick up module replaced this has been happening. Sorry and thanks
PS-Marina also changed my impeller pump at same time, so maybe something there?
Do you use the throttle only position of the shifter when starting? If not, that's why it won't start.
It does sound like your neutral safety switch might be loose or out of adjustment.
The pickup inside the dist was replaced.

bones774 said:Funny you ask about the port side exhaust elbow, because there is a wire hanging loose there as i described this last year in a thread. Scroll down to last post.

You need to check the timing.
Timing was good.
That part is the same for all the engines. The one that differs is the module (called the 'Ignition Amplifier') on the elbow.
That is interesting. Is the ignition amplifier still the original, or has it also been changed at some time in the past?
Igniton Amp is original
I would get the engine warmed up and sit down with it and a timing light, shop tacho and a piece of paper and graph out the timing curve. That black lead could be a missing ground wire giving the modules an incorrect ground reference.
Chris.......
(Do you have Merc service manual #9? It has plenty of really good info on the ignition system)
