Intro and question

Recently found this site and can't believe how much info is on here. I do have a question. Last year I bought my first boat, a 69 CeeBee Avenger with what I was told was a 115HP Mercury O/B. My question is the serial # is 2842257 on the tag, but that doesn't seem to match. I believe the upper portion of the motor was changed. Does anyone know how to find if that is indeed the case?
Thanks,
Aaron

Re: Intro and question

That's what I found. Unfortunately the guy I bought the boat off of said it was a 1985 and that the upper portion had been "changed". This is probably a dumb question, but is there way to tell if the top had been changed? Sorry, as I mentioned this is my first venture into boating.

Aaron, don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but the 85 115 exhaust plate and a center section with the serial number on the center sectin you have simply won't bolt together. So I afraid that some one is BSing someone. Sorry for the news--Bob

Re: Intro and question

No problem Bob. I took the cover off last night and the same s/n# was stamped on the top portion of the block (at least I think that's the block). Looks like I'm the proud owner of a 70 115HP.

I don't really care how old the motor is, as long as I know what I have and it runs good.

Any major areas of concern with these motors?

Also, I have a Clymer manual, but it covers 72-89. Is there a better book for my motor (besides the obvious Clymer book for a 1970)?

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Intro and question

here you go, i had a 71 135, put new internal wiring harness, and found a new old stock controller on ebay, with the external harness, new control cable, it was like a new engine. still had the hard to start, you have to practically flood me to start, when cold, most inlines have. these guy have the original manual from mercury for your engine. it's the best.
