1997 115 HP Evinrude Intruder. When I try start my motor, once in awhile (doesn't happen every time) the motor won't turn over, all I hear coming from the motor is a humming sound. It will continue to do this until you hear something "catch," then it finally will turn over and start. It's tough to describe the sounds I'm hearing, but humming noise is the only thing I can think of. My battery is good, and connections are good. Beginning of a failing starter?

Re: Intruder Starter?

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Intruder Starter?

I'm 99.9% sure that it isn't the battery. The cables are clean and connections are good. I'll check on the the cable from the solenoid to starter. If it isn't the cable, what are the chances it's the solenoid vs the starter? How much does it cost to have the starter rebuilt? I've found new starters online for $100, would that be a better route? Thanks again for the reply, I really appreciate your help and imput!

REMOVE and thoroughly clean the NEGATIVE battery cable from the engine block and clean it.

Tight, clean looking connections are the trouble, FF. It only takes a few thousandths of one ohm of resistance in that circuit to produce the symptoms you describe.

TD and DJ are spot-on.
