BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Jalal Talabani said Thursday that he had been assured by Democrat congressional leaders during a recent visit to Washington that they had no plans for a quick withdrawal of U.S. forces.

Talabani, a Kurd whose post is ceremonial, said Democrats also backed the idea of placing U.S. troops in bases while putting Iraqis in charge of security in and around cities.

“They all told me that they want the success of Iraq’s democratically elected government and continued support for the Iraqi people to defeat terrorism,” Talabani said about his trip to the United States in late September as many were predicting the Democratic congressional triumph in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“One of them (a Democrat leader) told me that any early withdrawal will be a catastrophe for the United States and the world,” Talabani, speaking from his northern hometown of Sulaimaniyah, told the Dubai-based Al-Jazeera satellite broadcaster.

Looks like the Democrats are going to stay the course.

Hmmm.

The Associated PressPublished: November 9, 2006
The government of Nouri al-Maliki has been pressuring the United States to speed up the handover of power to the Iraqi army. The Shiite-dominated leadership wants to see U.S. forces quickly pulled out of Iraqi population centers and repositioned in U.S. bases as a first step toward an eventual withdrawal.

The top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. George Casey, has said he believes Iraqis should be able to control the country's security in 12-18 months.

Maybe not.

There were *no* democrats advocating a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq.

It is time, however, for the Iraqis to get their act together, disarm the militias, amend their constitution to give the Sunnis a part of the action (and oil revenue)

There are *no* democrats that want to turn Iraq into a safe haven for Alqaida. There are also *no* democrats that want to maintain the status quo of being in the middle of a civil war between Shiias and Sunnis, as "Staying the course" implies. Get it together, Iraqis, if you want a country, and do the hard part of political compromises that everyone can live with.

We can help keep foreign influences out (Murtha Plan), but they have to put Bahgdad back together themselves, however it is going to be put back together

That's the trouble with slogans, like "cut and run" Aside from being inaccurate, they are also misleading.

Here an Iraqi brother weighing in with some good advice for Democratically Approved war on terror:

Quote:
“The vote shows the Iraqi and American people are of one mind about withdrawing U.S. troops,” said Falah Hassan Shanshal, who leads the parliamentary bloc of radical anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

“We hope the Democrats don't forget their campaign promises. If they don't, we will deal with them in a brotherly way once the last American soldier pulls out from Iraq,” he said.

McGovern to Meet With Congress on War
Nov 09 11:31 PM US/Eastern

George McGovern, the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, said Thursday that he will meet with more than 60 members of Congress next week to recommend a strategy to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by June.
If Democrats don't take steps to end the war in Iraq soon, they won't be in power very long, McGovern told reporters before a speech at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"I think the Democratic leadership is wise enough to know that if they're going to follow the message that election sent, they're going to have to take steps to bring the war to a conclusion," he said.

McGovern will present his recommendations before the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a 62-member group led by Reps. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee.

"The best way to reduce this insurgency is to get the American forces out of there," McGovern said. "That's what's driving this insurgency."

I guess the Iraqis will learn what the Democrats definition of "quickly" is, and just how far they can be trusted.

Hey, does anyone know who George McGovern is? And why the Dem leadership needs him for the New and approved war on terror?
