i have a 1985 baretta i was told it is called the iron duke , it is a 170 4cyl could use some info thanks

If you're sure it's a 170hp, 4 cylinder... You have the ubiquitous '470'... and it's no Iron Duke!!! Mostly Ford 460 parts, except for the engine block... Mercrury Marine's own casting... Aluminium, so you have a heat exchanger and MUST run coolant, and because it's the early 470, it's a 3" exchanger... Make sure you have it cleaned out every couple of years or the engine will run hot... Not a good thing with those engines...

Do a search on '470'... There is HEAPS of info on them here...

the motor is wider than the 140 mercruser that my dad has in his boat.

the origial iron duke was a chevy 4 cylinder that gained its notoriety in the mid 1960's in such cars as the nova because of its ruggedness and durability. it is the same block used by omc for the 3.0l 140.
