Is 32 oz enough?

When I refilled my outdrive (Alpha gen 1) with gear oil after a waterpump change, I pumped in the recommended 32 oz of oil. All went in but none came out the vent. I subsequently had to drain the oil again to go back into the waterpump. None had leaked out to where it isn't supposed to be. Is 32 oz enough even though it doesn't fill to the vent? I hate to spend $14 for another 2 or 3 oz.

Nope,... It takes some of the 2nd quart to Fill it,...
It's more than a quart, but less than a quart, 'n a half,...

You can save it til next Fall, 'n then you'll only need another quart,...


'n, Btw,... I knew yer doin' a rebuild, but have been wonderin' why yer askin' this sorta question in the Repair forum,....

you fill from the bottom UNTILL it comes out the top.no guesswork on how much.

Hope you don't use the oil you drained, unless it's clean. Don't want to get any crud in there.
And like bt said, there is absolutely no guess work.

After you drained the oil, replace the O rings and then Get your self two quarts of oil (marine of course), start pumping and go through the first one, then switch to the second and keep pumping till you do see oil coming out through the top. Then place the top screw back in, remove the oil pump hose your using to refill the oil and place the lower screw back in. Voila

Ayuh,.... When usin' pump-quarts, I stop Before the 1st 1 is empty, 'n switch,...

Don't need a big ole air bubble in the drive,...
it could take awhile to burp,...

Good catch, the one thing I didn't mention.

And no need to worry about getting close to the bottom of the 1st quart. Stop when it's about 3/4 of the way empty, just to be sure u don't get that air bubble in there, then proceed to the next quart as I mentioned above. After your all done you can empty what ever is left from one quart to the other.

Turns out in took 34 oz to refill my outdrive. An extra quart was needed for a lousy 2 oz!

My Yamaha F150 supposedly uses 33 oz. When you change the oil, outboard motors need to be tilted as high as possible, left for 30 seconds and then dropped all the way down. That makes sure all the oil drains back into the lower unit.

You drain out the lower unit gear lube into a clean pan where you can inspect the outgoing fluid for metal shavings and water intrusion.

I use a pump to refill the lower unit, instead of squeezing the bottle. That way, the full 32 oz. is used. And there's most always going to be an ounce or two left--and the 32 oz. will overflow thru the vent plug.

Anyway it goes, you want to see a smooth overflow of oil. I use Pennzoil lower unit grease from Walmart ($5.50), so it's affordable in case a second quart happens to be needed.

+1^^^ I know money is tight but spend a little on oil now or potentially a whole lot more later on... your choice.

Don't forget to add to the reservoir....If it has one.
