Re: is 40hp good enough

I used to have a sheltie (same hull, similar weigh to a 535) with a 30 Johnson. It never got enough speed to plane. MAx speed acheived was 14 mph according to gps. So I guess a 40 might have enough juice to get it off to plane, but to be on the save side, especially if you carry lots of equipment ( I did for fishing) a 50 might be a better choice. And boy do sheltie fly with 50's....

I really love my old boat, it rides well in most condition (up to a force 4), dead easy to launch, I used to do it single handed. Only reservation I have on the shetland is the height of the gunnels/sides, a little too low for my liking.

Don't make the mistake of cheap vs good value for money.

An outboard might be cheap, but ask yourself a question, "why is it so cheap?"

Do you want an outboard that will cost more to fix than it originally cost or will worth once it's fixed?

Make sure you have the outboard cheaked out probably.

As I explained to you before, Johnny, You need at least 50hp to reliably plane the Shetland with an average load, and that is with ideal rigging and trim. If you are going to settle for displacement speeds, stick with the 30.

Good luck. :)

Johnny - agree with above posts, especially the suggestion to go for a 50 hp.

Personally, I'd up that even more - but then I like extra power. I've ridden a Sheltie with 60hp, and it flew. Wet ride, and you don't have to use the extra power, but fun when you want it.

If you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly.

Check the price with no px - then check ebay for the going rate on your 30 horse motor.

You might end up better off.
