is a 115 evinrude to big

i was offered a 83 115 hp evinrude for free. now it does run i just need to be assured that its not stupid big for my 68 16' Westfield

The North East was the same basic hull design as the Edinboro, I think, which was one size up from your Westfield.

Might be worth considering that the boat is now 42 years old, and the transom or possibly the hull may not be as strong as when new.

Just my opinion. Maybe you could trade the 115 for something else....

Also, the 68 Westfield was rated for 70 hp at the time....

115 IS way too much motor... A good running boat is far better than a poorly manageable never mind unsafe rig. My 2 cents

How much does that 115 weigh? You'll probably want to put the battery and fuel tank up front to keep the balance and watch your payload.
My Westfield has an 80hp E-rude Speedyfour, it weighs 233lbs, only 3lbs more than the original 60hp, my transom has also been re-built stronger than the original balsa core, the HP is managable (with your right arm) but you can't do much about the weight.

For what it's worth, my 1960 Niagra had a 70 HP Johnson on it for decades. I picked up a 1976 Evinrude 85 HP that weighs LESS than the Johnson did. It's been on there for a few years now and handles great at full throttle. No signed of wear or give on the transom either, and I give it a close inspection every spring.

I know I am a bit late to this thread but I do know that in '75 the 85hp-135hp all weighed the same (4 cylinder models). The horsepower came from the increase bore size. I believe the 70hp model is a 3 cylinder configuration.

My '07 ETEC 115hp weights 100lbs more then my '75 85HP and the stern does sit a tad bit more in the water.
