is a 1989 johnson vro equipped with 'quick start'?

I want to use joe reeves timing method as found in the sticky. Is anyone on who can tell me if my motor has quick start feature? (I suppose I will go to the manual if I have to)

Well quick start was available in 1989 but not knowing what model Johnson you are running makes it kind of tough to answer your question. Not all models had quick start.

Yes, it has Quick Start. Follow Joe's method.

Hi retiredfornow,
I'm no expert and welcome correction ....quickstart is an auto timing advance on startup that causes a faster idler until the engine warms up (temp less than 96f). Since the timing when cold is affected Joe Reeves static timing method for setting the timing without the engine running will be affected. In other words the quickstart feature must be disconnected when using Joes method (from the sticky at the top of the forum). Now I am off to discover how to disable the quickstart.

Thanks, 99. Just wondering cause I used Joes timing method. I have a '88 60hp evinrude, and I don't think I have the quick start. If I do, it doesn't work and I can't find it in my factory manual.

To disable QS ground out the white/black wire going to the port temp switch.
